Nearly six in ten Brits (58%) who have been on a family holiday say their trip was “truly great” – with the top indicator of this being that everyone in the family had a good time.

Other key components of a good family break include the kids never complaining about being bored, wanting to return to the same location after the trip is over – and talking about it for ages afterwards. And three in ten adults feel they have had a good trip if they didn't have a chance to think about work while they were away.

The survey of 2,000 parents, with kids aged up to 16 years old, found that over two-thirds (67%) claim these family holidays are the most important thing in their lives. And nearly half (48%) take the opportunity to go away with their extended family – including parents, siblings, and grandparents.

One in six (16%) believe you should feel like you need another holiday immediately after returning from the holiday, in order to recover from all the fun that was had. And 31% feel the sign of a good trip is replying to someone who asks you how it was with a whole host of information about what you did – rather than the usual “it was good, thanks”.

The research was commissioned by Butlin's, to highlight its family midweek breaks from £49 – including children’s live shows, swimming, and unlimited fairground rides.

Alex Meyer, from the seaside resort brand, said: “We all want our holidays to be memorable – and for many, a sign of a great trip is having a jam-packed schedule of activities and events that everyone enjoys.

“Ultimately, a great holiday should bring families closer together, with something for everyone involved. The research also showed one of the signs of a truly great holiday is almost feeling the need for another one, due to having a fully action-packed week.”

It also emerged that, for 59%, it’s more important than ever to find holidays that offer good value as the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite.

And 30% believe getting such value, and having lots of things included in the price, are one of the most important things about a trip away.

Meanwhile, more than half (55%) find it exciting when deciding where to go on a break – although 17% find it tricky, and 10% find it frustrating trying to keep everyone happy.

Great food, good weather, and having a swimming pool and a clean hotel were the among the more modest important components to a stay.

However, two-thirds think finding a holiday destination that caters for everyone’s desires, while offering great value, can be a tricky task.

As a result, 27% have had to resort to taking turns when picking a holiday location, according to the OnePoll data – although one in five have never let their kids pick where they go on holiday.

Alex Meyer, from Butlins, added: “What’s clear from the research is that people want more for their money, and want to feel they’re getting real value from their trip away.

“This can be tricky when trying to cater for everyone, particularly if you’re looking to head away with your wider family, too.

“Thankfully, our resorts have everything in one place, so those who want to enjoy a variety of live shows as well as fun activities don’t have to look far, or pay any extra to put smiles on faces.”
