We all know that what goes around often comes back around, especially when it comes to trends, as we've seen fashion from the 90s and 00s resurfacing and becoming hip once more - and it seems the same also goes for baby names.

While some parents have been loving old-fashioned, vintage names for years, it seems monikers that were popular in more recent history are now also making a comeback, with BabyCentre's most recent list of the top 100 most popular baby names of the year featuring retro throwbacks from the 80s, with one, in particular, crashing back onto the list after a few years of falling out of favour with mums and dads.

The name John popped into the top 100, coming in at number 92 for the boys as a brand-new entry for 2023. The moniker had previously been popular with Gen X parents and wasn't the only recent retro name to prove popular this year, with Sarah equally coming into the top 100 for girls as a new entry. Sarah was the second-highest new entry for girls, landing at 58 on the list. Other retro names featured in the charts included David, James, Sebastian, Maria, and Penelope.

According to the experts at BabyCentre, the name John is originally from the Hebrew Yochanan and it means "God is gracious", via the Greek Ioannes and the Latin Iohannes. But while the name might be on the rise again this year, it wasn't featured in either the BabyCentre top 100 or the ONS most popular baby name list last year.

As well as the resurgence of retro names, there were a number of other big trends within the most popular baby names for 2023 - including film and television-inspired names, charming nature names, and some Eurovision monikers. as well. Sarah Redshaw, managing editor for BabyCentre, explained: "As more and more people work in the comfort of their homes and gardens post-pandemic, and away from the bright lights of city office blocks, nature-themed names have blossomed. New parents have also been branching out to tree-inspired names Willow, rooting itself at 14th place, and Hazel, which was a new entry to the top 100 at 72."

This comes after it was revealed that a baby name many thought had gone 'extinct' is also set to make a comeback. The name in question is Gary, which is rising in popularity again according to the UK Baby Names website, where it is currently listed as a "trending name" for 2023 alongside the likes of James, David, Jack, and Sarah, all of which have already proved popular.

The rise in parents calling their little boys Gary can be traced back to 2022 when the name appeared on the top 100 list of trending names along with Otis, Caleb, Theodore, Albie and Elodie. This could mean that if the naming trend continues, there might be an influx of babies named Gary for the first time after the name fell out of favour for over a decade.
