Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes believe Harry Kane would've preferred a move to Manchester United over Bayern Munich - as he scored again on Wednesday night.

Kane converted a penalty to help Bayern beat United 4-3 at the Allianz Arena. The England captain, who also assisted Leroy Sane's goal, has now scored five times in six games for the German giants since his £100million summer move from Tottenham.

United were linked with Kane but decided to sign Rasmus Hojlund instead, agreeing a £72m deal with Atalanta for his services. Many fans questioned the transfer due to the 20-year-old's modest record in Italy, scoring just nine Serie A goals last season.

Hojlund scored his first United goal during Wednesday night's game. Although Ferdinand and Scholes accept the Denmark international has the potential to become a superstar, they believe Ten Hag should've signed Kane instead.

"Yes, without a shadow of a doubt," Scholes told TNT Sports when asked if United should've signed Kane ahead of Wednesday's game. "You think, Man Utd are crying out for a centre forward, now look, whatever it would have cost they should have got him.

"You are buying 25 to 30 goals a season. The players they have got at the moment are more suited to playing on the left-hand side. Anthony Martial is not a great centre-forward, not very good on the left-hand side as of late.

"Marcus Rashford does not want to play centre-forward, he wants to play on the left-hand side. I know they have brought Hojlund in, but I think he is one for the future. He hasn’t got a great scoring record yet. He may do that in the future but we don’t know that.

"Harry Kane coming into this team, you are talking 25 to 30 goals, and budget wise and whoever is above Ten Hag, and if you had the money to buy one player, I would have brought Harry Kane all day long - he brings so much to this team."

Kane has made a blistering start to his Bayern career, scoring four goals in his first four Bundesliga games. Scholes' fellow pundit Ferdinand added: "I 100 per cent agree. You have to go out for a talent like that, someone that guarantees you goals.

"Last season, we were playing with a striker who got zero goals, you add 30 goals and his influence, impact on games, his character, the environment and the culture as well. He is a leader, he is everything you want to change the way things are going at your club."

Scholes then described Kane as a "Man Utd centre-forward" before Ferdinand claimed "I reckon he would have preferred to go to Man Utd". Scholes replied: "I do as well."
