Childhood films hold a special place in fans hearts as they always bring on a feeling of nostalgia, leaving people longing to experience the movie for the first time over and over again. Thankfully, in the golden age of sequels and franchises, most get that opportunity.

Disney's kooky comedy Freaky Friday about a mother and daughter who switch bodies has been a firm favourite since its original release in 1976.

The film was taken to new heights of cult classic when it was rebooted in 2003, starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan.

20 years on and Freaky Friday holds an 88 per cent approval rating on critic site Rotten Tomatoes and has fans begging the stars to return for more.

It seems their cries for a sequel have been heard, with leading actress Curtis all but confirming there was another film on its way but refused to promise anything more.

The 64-year-old has enjoyed success in the Halloween franchise as well as more recently being nominated for several awards for Everything Everywhere All At Once and Knives Out but has her sights set back on the body swap comedy.

Disney's 2003 classic sees Tess (Curtis) preparing to remarry while at odds with her daughter Anna (Lohan), until the family heads to a Chinese restaurant one night. They are given fortune cookies by the owner and wake up in each other's bodies, unable to switch back.

"It's going to happen," Curtis told Variety at the Producers Guild Awards, "Without saying there's anything officially happening, I'm looking at you in this moment and saying, 'Of course it's going to happen.' It's going to happen."

This isn't the first time the Halloween star has teased the return of Tess and Anna as she posted a throwback picture of the two on February 10, 2023.

She wrote: "It's Friday. I'm just sayin! Freaky fingers crossed!" and tagged Lohan as well as Disney in the post. Her 36-year-old co-star responded with fingers crossed and heart eyed emojis.

Fans went wild, with the comments full of people begging for the film to get a sequel - one said: "Not to be dramatic but if this doesn't happen I’ll explode or something." Celebrity fans like Zooey Deschanel and Selma Blair also commented sharing love for the film.

Curtis also told People her plans for the plot would see her as "the old grandma who switches places", adding: "I would like to see Lindsay be the hot grandma, and I would like to see me try to deal with toddlers today."

Her on-screen daughter, Lohan, has recently made a return to acting and signed a multi-picture deal with Netflix - starting with festive film Falling for Christmas which aired in last December.

Nothing has been confirmed by Disney so far but Curtis appears to be determined to make it happen so fans will have to keep their "freaky fingers crossed".
