McCoist dismisses Neville's Glazers criticism with stinging Man Utd verdict

Ally McCoist has called on Manchester United's players to "take more responsibility" after Gary Neville continued to lay blame at the Glazers' door after their poor start to the season continued.

The Red Devils lost for a third time in five games as they were outplayed by Brighton on Saturday afternoon. The Seagulls recorded their fourth straight Premier League win over United, whose on unbeaten home run came to an end in emphatic style.

Brighton had found themselves 3-0 up before Hannibal Mejbri's late consolation as Erik ten Hag's problems mount. United are dealing with issues on the pitch and uncertainty off it as their takeover saga rumbles on with the Glazers' stance on selling still not completely known.

Despite their absence and the poor performances, Neville has maintained that it is the Americans who must shoulder the blame. He said on social media: "Oh and yes the Glazers are responsible. It’s how it works. You own a business and everything good and bad sits with you! They inherited the best in all areas. They’ve overseen 10 years of mediocrity off the pitch and on the pitch. They set the culture of greed, ill-discipline, indecision and uncertainty that runs right through the club."

McCoist, speaking after the dust had settled, maintained that the Glazers were an issue, but pushed more blame onto the players, who were torn apart by their opposition at the weekend.

He told TalkSport: "There's one or two problems at Manchester United, some bigger than others. The Glazers are obviously a problem but, to be fair, it is not the Glazers who are dropping Welbeck when he makes a run from the middle of the park - that's Casemiro. It is not the Glazers diving in to stop Gross' shot for the second goals - that's Martinez.

"I tend to agree, I think the players have got to take more responsibility. However, I look at Man Utd, I look at Chelsea, and they must be scratching their heads at the difference in the level of recruitment with the team who won on Saturday - Brighton."

Much was made of the financial differences between the two sides as the entirety of Brighton's starting XI cost less than United forward Rasmus Hojlund. The Seagulls team included Danny Welbeck, scorer of the first goal, and a man who'd been deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford previously.

Ten Hag denied after the match that his side were in a crisis, despite their slow start to the season. He said: "It bothers me [the form], but I have to see the way we play. It's about character, we have to see how strong we are and how the team sticks together. Players standing up and showing character because in all the games, especially the game today [Saturday] and against Arsenal and Forest, we have seen we can play well and create chances."
