Netflix fans have had a huge appetite for thrillers as of late - from the TV show You, which dropped a fourth season this year, to The Night Agent, which also came out in 2023. Now fans have been glued to their TVs after a new limited series dropped on Netflix called Dear Child - and it's left them unable to sleep. The psychological thriller has climbed the video streaming service's charts since dropping on September 7 - and has had its audience "on the edge" of their seats.

Dear Child is a German mini-series based on the novel Liebes Kind, which means Dear Child in English, from author Romy Hausmann. The shocking tale focuses on a woman called Lena, who lives in isolation with two children Hannah and Jonathan, and their abductor. One night she escapes but has a catastrophic car accident.

She is taken to hospital, accompanied by Hannah in the ambulance - but the nightmare continues to unfold the reality of what happened to her in captivity comes to light, and a 13-year missing person case is reopened.

The film has been described as being "as tense as Gone Girl" as well as "claustrophobic, dungeon-like" elements which has an air of Room, starring Brie Larson. Since the six episodes launched on the platform, the series has shot up the Netflix charts, with many rushing to social media to share their thoughts.

One person wrote: "I watched Dear Child on Netflix. I know I'm struggling to sleep tonight," while another agreed, adding: "Watched Dear Child on Netflix last night. I struggled to sleep after that...." A third person commented: "Dear Child on Netflix is f***ing with my brain, but it's definitely interesting."

A fourth added: "Dear Child on Netflix was a really good limited series with so many plot twists," while another said: "Guys, I've Watched #DearChild on Netflix last night—by far, one of the best binges I've had in years. True crime, psychological thriller, murder mystery all rolled up into one six-part miniseries."

The Netflix synopsis for the film reads: "A mysterious woman's escape from her harrowing captivity points investigators toward the dark truth behind an unsolved disappearance 13 years earlier."

Before the show's release, writer and director Isabel Kleefeld told Netflix that she was "fascinated" by the book and read it all in one night. She added: "The result is an exciting game with reality, a puzzle that the audience can always add to and reassemble. It is the story of a crime that has many victims, directly or indirectly".
