Liam Payne’s romantic holiday with girlfriend Kate Cassidy may have turned into a vacation from hell after he suffered kidney problems that led him to seek medical help - but the star was living in luxury before his hospital dash.

The 30-year-old singer was celebrating his one-year anniversary with 23-year-old Kate in Lake Como in the north of Italy - and was staying at the luxurious Mandarin Oriental water-side villas before health problems interrupted their celebrations. Located in historic Villa Roccabruna, and with unrivalled lake views, rooms at the five-star hotel can cost as much as €12,000 (£10,000) per night at this time of year. While even more ‘standard’ rooms at the hotel cost around €3,900 (£3,350) per night.

The hotel offers spa treatments and high-end dining experiences. While the hotel website boasts the main property is the: “19th Century Villa Roccabruna is at the heart of the resort and skilfully renovated to create a sense of modern Italian elegance with a subtle oriental charm.” They also boast the beautiful building is "Immersed in a centuries-old botanical park on the eastern shore of Lake Como".

Kate had been sharing snaps of the luxury hotel via social media while she and Liam were enjoying all the sights and delights of the venue. However, things took a dramatic turn several hours after they had arrived at the hotel - as Liam was rushed to hospital after suffering agonising kidney pain.

News broke on Tuesday that the former One Direction singer had been taken to get medical help after falling ill - and was expected to spend the rest of the week in hospital. A source told The Sun: “Liam is in a bad way but he’s in the best place he can be and finally doctors will be able to get to the bottom of what is going on. Naturally he is gutted that his and Kate’s trip to Lake Como has been ruined but at least she was there to help him when he fell ill.

"Doctors have warned him not to expect to be signed off to go home for at least another six days." Concerned fans have been begging Kate for more details about Liam’s condition, with fans bombarding her Instagram page with questions.

One concerned fan wrote in the comment section of one of her Lake Como snaps: "How’s Liam?! Pls tell us Kate,we are worried." While another asked: "Is Liam ok????" Liam has a long history of battling health issues - having been born prematurely in 1993 and requiring medical help while an infant.

Doctors soon realised that he had a scarred kidney and he required sixteen injections in each arm every morning and night to help him. Liam opened up about his decades of health battles in 2011, telling reporters: "I effectively died as a baby. I was born three weeks early and I kept being ill. From the age of zero to four I was always in hospital having tests done but they couldn't find out what was wrong."

Over time, his condition improved and he later threw himself into sport while at school. He also explained his early life issues have ultimately given him a clear perspective to live a healthier life. He said previously: "I have to be careful not to drink too much, even water, and I have to keep myself as healthy as possible."
