Meghan Markle was spotted wearing a pair of cream-tailored shorts as she attended a wheelchair basketball game with Prince Harry to kick off the Invictus Games.

The former member of the royal family appears to be enjoying her newfound freedom as she wouldn't have been able to wear the shortsaccording to strict royal fashion protocol. For shorts, only young boys in the royal family are allowed to wear them, and that's only until they're eight-years-old. After that, the youngsters must wear long pants as a "silent class marker".

Meghan showed off her toned legs in the linen shorts and teamed them with a matching jacket by Staud and flat Chanel slingback shoes.

Speaking to Harper's Bazaar in 2018, etiquette expert William Hanson said: "It’s a very English thing to dress a young boy in shorts. Trousers are for older boys and men, whereas shorts on young boys is one of those silent class markers that we have in England. Although times are (slowly) changing, a pair of trousers on a young boy is considered quite middle class — quite suburban. And no self-respecting aristo or royal would want to be considered suburban. Even the Duchess of Cambridge.”

Meghan's new "suburban" look comes after she touched down in Dusseldorf, Germany, to reunite with her husband Prince Harry as the Invictus Games 2023 got underway. Many had expected the pair to arrive together - given this is one of Harry's main annual events - but like many busy parents, the couple had a very relatable reason that Meghan stayed behind.

Meghan said: "Hi everybody, it is so special to be here and I'm sorry that I was a little late to the party. Just like so many of you, we know this is about family and friends and the community that Invictus has created and the Fisher House has created.

"I had to spend a little more time getting our little ones settled at home and get them to drop off. Three milkshakes and a school drop off and I just landed a couple of hours ago and I am thrilled that the first event I can do for Invictus is here with all of you," she explained. "It is amazing and I hear it has got off to a good start so far."
