Fans struggling to get their hands on one of this Christmas' must-have games, Disney Lorcana, have been given a boost with the announcement that an expansion, Rise of the Floodborn, will hit shelves within weeks - bringing a host of new characters and cards to the table.

Disney's first ever move into the trading card market launched last month and has proved a big hit with collectors and gamers alike, with most of the stock of Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter selling out within days of it hitting shelves in the UK, barring the odd stray starter decks at independent stores as well as online at Ravensburger and GAME.

When the First Chapter launched, shops opened at midnight while fans queued for hours at special launch events in London and Dublin to buy the first sets in scenes that left even bigwigs at games firm Ravensburger, who teamed up with Disney to produce the game, surprised.

Speaking at today's announcement, Filip Francke, Global Head of Games at Ravensburger said: "The response to the release of the Disney Lorcana TCG has been astounding. The game has only been available for about a month, and fans are already eager for more.

“As we work diligently behind the scenes to meet current demand, we’re also planning incredible updates and new sets for years to come that we can’t wait to share. We’re excited to reveal a little more about what is coming this winter to expand the game and story for this year.”

Disney Lorcana: Rise of the Floodborn will bring 200 new cards and a host of new characters to the table and will be out at independent game stores on November 17 before a wider launch at major chains on December 1 - just in time for Christmas.

What's more, fans will be able to get their hands on cards from The First Chapter in time for the festive season as part of Disney Lorcana: Disney100 Edition, a limited-edition, premium collection of cards from the first two Disney Lorcana TCG sets to be released alongside Rise of the Floodborn.

Independent games shops like , and as well as major retailers like Ravensburger, Game and Argos are expected to open pre-orders for Disney Lorcana: Rise of the Floodborn shortly.

Disney Lorcana announced a reprint to hit shelves in early 2024 in response to the huge demand to the game, which was given five stars by our reviewer, who described it as 'Magic: The Gathering meets Pokémon with a sprinkling of pixie dust' with a gameplay mechanic that meant it was enjoyable for families and more serious gamers alike.

Among new much-loved Disney stories getting the Lorcana treatment are Zootopia, Basil the Great Mouse Detective, The Jungle Book, Snow White and Raya and the Last Dragon. The expansion also includes a new ability, Resist which allows characters to withstand additional damage from more highly powered characters, which could help alleviate some players' complaints about over-powered cards.

All Rise of the Floodborn cards can be played with existing decks and future expansions. The new set includes two new Starter Decks featuring combinations of Amber/Sapphire or Amethyst/Steel inks, booster packs, a new Illumineer’s Trove, new playmats and card sleeves.

Meanwhile the Disney100 Edition cards have an exclusive Disney100 frame design, a satin holographic foil finish, and a copy of the animator’s signature prominently displayed. The £49.99 gift set also includes four Rise of the Floodborn booster packs.

The launch of the expansion ties in neatly with Disney’s 100th anniversary, which has seen them collaborate with everyone from to and beyond. London is also set to play host to this autumn as part of the celebrations.
