Olivia Rodrigo in VMAs 'chaos' as set crashes down during song - sparking horror

Olivia Rodrigo's VMAs performance left viewers in horror as the stage setting appeared to collapse around her - but it wasn't quite as it seemed.

The 20-year-old singer performed her latest hit Vampire to the packed-out New Jersey arena, sitting on the ground surrounded by foliage in a stunning red dress for the opening bars. However as the song went on, sparks and smoke started to fall from the ceiling. Olivia looked around the stage appearing concerned, but she continued to sing along.

Seconds later trees began to fall, resulting in a member of the crew running onto the stage and directing Olivia to leave. There were some panicked faces in the audience from stars and guests who didn't quite know what was going on.

But Olivia's true fans will know this was far from an accident, as it's actually exactly what happens in the Vampire music video. In fact, once the panic calmed people were full of praise for her dedication to recreate the video, and she certainly made her performance memorable.

Thankfully, Olivia left the stage unharmed - however, it's a different story in the video version as she's seen covered in blood after being hit by a spotlight.

During the stunt, the camera panned around the crowd to show audience members and celebs looking extremely concerned. Some even accused Selena Gomez of "throwing shade" at Olivia due to her facial expressions at that moment. She also appeared to be covering her ears. But other fans were quick to point out that she actually just looked worried, and she was probably just covering her ears because of the loud bangs from the collapsing set.

But others wondered if it hinted at something more - as rumours continue to circulate on whether Taylor Swift, Selena's best friend, and Olivia have bad blood.

The teen singing sensation reportedly had to shell out huge sums of money after retroactively giving Swift a credit on her hit son Deja Vu.

After Olivia left the stage a blue curtain fell down and the music cut to clips of her previous hits. She then returned to the stage with Get Him Back, a song from her upcoming album. She was joined by a group of dancers dressed all in pink with black Converse, who performed around her for the remainder of the set.

Olivia was nominated for a number of awards at this year's VMAs, including Best Pop, Song of the Year, and Video of the Year. However she lost out to the first two of these to Taylor Swift.
