England face Scotland at Hampden on Wednesday night in a friendly which is sure to be anything but.

International football’s oldest fixture returns for the 115th time, with Scotland aiming to get one over the Auld Enemy for the first time in 24 years. And rarely have the Tartan Army arrived to a game in such buoyant mood, following a faultless Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.

Steve Clarke’s side are all but assured of their place in Germany, having won all five of their qualifiers, including a memorable win over Spain. England are in a similarly commanding position in their group, although they were forced to settle for a laboured draw against Ukraine last time out.

The game will be played in front of a packed out Hampden Park, with hopes of another scalp. We’ll have all the updates from Glasgow on what is sure to be a thrilling night.

Bellingham ends England debate

The travelling fans were singing “2-0 in your cup final” before half time.

Then they started serenading the England manager with chants of “Southgate you’re the one.” And they need to find a love song for Jude Bellingham because this was a defining performance for a player with the world at his feet.

Bellingham scored one, provided an assist and also played a role in England’s other goal in a sensational man of the match performance as he owned the pitch. The Real Madrid midfielder is just 20 but stepped up when England needed him most and showed that he is destined to one day captain his country.

Talking points from Hampden

It was the blood and thunder that many envisaged ahead of the special anniversary match between Scotland and England - but for 45 minutes it only came from one team.

Despite the inevitable raucous pre-match atmosphere and drowning out of God Save The King, it was England who dominated the first half to lead 2-0 through goals from Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham. And they seemed comfortable for much of the second half before Harry Maguire's own goal brought Scotland back into it only for Harry Kane to kill the game off late on.

Joe Cole hails England's new 'golden generation'

Channel 4's pundits have been discussing England's quality, and the words 'Golden Generation' have come up.

Joe Cole played for previous great Three Lions sides, and even he has been blown away.

"We've had good teams in the past but there's always been something missing," he said.

"This team, I look through the squad and the players not here, and it ticks every box.

"I think it's the best England team I've ever played in or seen in my lifetime."

Souness frustrated by Scotland's lack of threat

"This is a passionate football crowd, we gave them nothing to shout about."

Scotland fans tell Lineker to 'stick to politics'

English football icon Gary Lineker irked Scotland fans with a tweet he posted during the meeting between the two nations at Hampden Park.

The Match of the Day presenter was bombarded with messages after he praised the dominant first-half display from the Three Lions. Gareth Southgate's men were not intimidated by a particularly emotional Hampden Park and quickly settled, enjoying plenty of possession in the opening exchanges.

Scotland made to wait for Euros

Over in Oslo, Georgia got a late goal back but couldn't find an equaliser.

That means Scotland's Euros qualification will have to wait.

They are eight points clear of third-placed Norway, though, with three games remaining.

In the other Group A game, Spain ran riot to record a 6-0 victory over Cyprus.

FULL-TIME: Scotland 1-3 England

Game over.

Scotland rallied well, and had their chances at 2-1, but there was no coming back after Harry Kane scored England's third.

Might these two teams end up meeting again next summer at the Euros?

More Scotland changes

Ryan Jack and Nathan Patterson on, Callum McGregor and Aaron Hickey off.

A minute of normal time to play.

England throw on two more

Callum Wilson and Conor Gallagher are both being given a late run-out by Gareth Southgate.

Harry Kane passes the armband to Harry Maguire as he leaves the field, while Jude Bellingham is the other man to get some rest.

Double Scotland change

John McGinn and Kieran Tierney have made way, with Stuart Armstrong and Lewis Ferguson on.

They'd much rather they were doing this with just one goal to make up.

GOAL! Scotland 1-3 England

England had started to turn the screw, and now they have their reward.

It's Harry Kane with the finish, but Jude Bellingham made it with a brilliant turn to find space followed by a disguised pass for the captain to beat Gunn.

Maguire's instant own goal response

Harry Maguire suffered the embarrassment of scoring an own-goal for England against Scotland at Hampden Park.

The Manchester United defender was dropped for the friendly, but came on at half-time for Marc Guehi. He would have been delighted to get on the pitch, given his lack of game time at United, but it did not go to plan.

He turned Andy Robertson's low cross into his own net past Aaron Ramsdale to give Scotland a lifeline and make it 2-1 following goals from Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham.

Maguire looked shell-shocked initially before turning to his team-mates and imploring them to "stay calm"

England starting to threaten again

Angus Gunn is keeping Scotland in this.

Jude Bellingham hits a shot from the left of the box which takes a deflection and is creeping inside the keeper's near post, but the Norwich man is equal to it.

Ball in the net

Harry Kane lashes one into the back of Gunn's net, but it won't count.

The England captain gave Kieran Tierney a nudge in the back as the ball came over, and the referee blew the whistle before Kane got his shot away.

Big stop by Gunn

Ebere Eze has a golden chance to find the net, but can't find a way past Gunn.

That could have silenced the home crowd, if only briefly, but instead it stays 2-1.

Double change for England

Gareth Southgate responds as quickly as he can, in the hope it stops Scotland's recovery.

Bukayo Saka and Ebere Eze are on, Foden and Rashford off.

McGinn goes close

It's still all Scotland, and it's still all Robertson.

His cross finds John McGinn in acres of space, but the ball comes off the midfielder's shoulder and flies off-target.

Scotland pushing

Scotland have clearly been buoyed by that goal, with the crowd and players alike getting some extra energy.

Robertson gets forward well again, finding the head of Dykes with a cross, but the sub can't get enough on his header.

GOAL! Scotland 1-2 England

Can you get a commentator's curse on written content?

Scotland's Andy Robertson puts in a cross from the right and a stretching Harry Maguire can only divert it past Ramsdale.

Game on.

Quiet night for Ramsdale

Aaron Ramsdale hasn't had a great deal to do tonight, and that's in no small part down to those in front of the England keeper.

Lewis Dunk has impressed in the first hour, adding a tidy block to his repertoire to deny a rallying Scotland.

England kit causes confusion

England supporters have been left confused after the team did not take to the pitch against Scotland wearing their special edition kit.

Kit manufacturer Nike created the Three Lions a one-off strip for the friendly at Hampden Park on Tuesday night. The minimalist design marks the 150th anniversary of the world’s oldest international fixture.

SECOND HALF: Scotland 0-2 England

Harry Maguire is on for England, with Marc Guehi making way fo the Man Utd man.

No word yet on whether that's a planned change or an injury scare.

The second half is now up and running.

Second half coming up

We can expect a few changes in the second half.

The question is whether it will disrupt the rhythm of a game that was really starting to get into gear at the end of the first period.

Scotland drowned out England anthem

Scotland's home faithful jeered the England national anthem so loudly before the two teams met at Hampden Park fans could barely hear God Save the King.

As is always the case when the two nations meet, emotions were running high long before kick off and both teams left the tunnel to be met with a wall of noise from the Tartan Army. The last clash between the two sides came at Euro 2020, which was contested in London under the iconic Wembley arch.
