John Fury 'would rather be dead' than see son Tyson back in dark place

'Tyson Fury's dad John Fury has admitted that he would rather be dead than watch his son descend back into his old mental health struggles.

The world heavyweight champion suffered severe issues with his mental health after winning the unified WBA, WBO and IBF belts from Wladimir Klitschko back in 2015 in one of the greatest British boxing nights in history. He was out of action for three years in the aftermath and was stripped of all his belts, with a string of controversies following outside of the ring.

And speaking in the new Netflix documentary At Home With The Furys, Tyson's dad John showed his concern as he watched his son indulge in a few beers during his short-lived retirement last year. The heavyweight found alcohol and drugs at the root of many of his problems during his time away, and his father fears he couldn't make it through another dark period.

“When I see Tyson drinking I’m looking back and I’m observing because I know what it could lead to," his dad told Netflix cameras during the third episode of the hit show. "I’m thinking to myself ‘Last time we did this or he did this it didn’t well’. It’s caused so many problems in the past has alcohol.

‌"Last time Tyson retired he wasn’t in a good place, on the fear of him going back there I couldn’t handle. The strength is gone, I couldn’t deal with it. I’d rather be dead than go down that road again, end of.”

The reality TV show has been a massive hit for Netflix, with Tyson himself claiming that it is the biggest show the streamer has ever released in the UK. And while that number is not known fully, it has been a major player atop the streaming service's public leaderboards since its release earlier this summer.

Produced by All3Media’s Optomen, Deadline reports that 'At Home With The Furys' broke into Barb’s ranking of the most-viewed shows in the UK upon its release with over 2.6million viewers. Netflix shows rarely hit those numbers due to their longevity and the timelessness of the content, but the Fury family were such must-see entertainment that millions had to tune in for the show's debut.

"It was No.1 for ages and in many different countries it was top ten," Fury told The Sun last week. "I've been told from Netflix that it was the highest ever viewed show in the UK that they've ever done in the UK. Everything Tyson Fury touches turns to gold, that's a fact. Paris has had a No.1 book as well and she's about to have another one. Everything we do seems to be pretty good and go well."
