Tommy Fury ignored dad John's advice to complete Jake Paul fight negotiations

Tommy Fury elected to ignore his dad's advice in order to secure the fight with rival Jake Paul at any cost.

Fury has held extensive talks to meet long-term foe Paul in the ring next month, with the pair agreeing a deal to touch gloves on February 26. The pair have been set to meet on two previous occasions, but the British star has been forced to pull out on both occasions after first breaking his rib, before being banned from travelling to the US for their scheduled contest last August.

And although a deal has now been struck, Fury was advised by his dad to walk away from the negotiating table after taking issue with his son being treated as the B-side by Paul's team. However Fury's dad John has admitted his son pleaded that he continue talks with his rival's entourage to prevent the fight collapsing again.

“What it was, I said let’s move on from it because I believed it was a 50-50 thing with a fair split," Fury Sr told Mirror Fighting courtesy of FreeBets.com when questioned how negotiations were revived and the showdown was agreed. "But Tommy said to me ‘Dad I want to fight this man, it is not about the money I have had enough of him’.

"‘As long as they pay me somewhere near what is acceptable, let's get this deal done’. We have probably been well underpaid, the money is one thing but if he knocks Jake spark out the world is his oyster. Tommy will be a very popular man come the 26th of February, I can guarantee that.”

Fury will return to action for the first time since his lacklustre display in an exhibition with Rolly Lambert last November. Paul was ringside for the event and heckled his rival from the commentary box, as the pair then came face-to-face for just the second time following the final bell.

Meanwhile Paul has not fought since dropping and outpointing UFC legend Anderson Silva in October, but will be eying a seventh straight boxing win to make his biggest statement yet. The 'Problem Child' has come under fire for not having faced an opponent with a natural background in the squared circle, but he could move on to further clashes if he is to progress beyond Fury.
