Man Utd 'plot move' for ex-Premier League star amid Antony and Sancho sagas

Erik ten Hag is ready to turn to former Aston Villa man Anwar El Ghazi to solve Manchester United's attacking midfield problems, it has been claimed.

United are looking light in the position after a string of developments in recent days. £86m wide-man Antony is currently on leave of absence, while questions remain over Jadon Sancho's future amid the England international's war of words with Ten Hag.

With the transfer window having shut, Premier League clubs are restricted to the free agent market if they want to add to their squad. However, El Ghazi is someone United's boss already knows well.

A product of Ajax's academy, El Ghazi played against Ten Hag's Utrecht during his time with the Amsterdam club. He left the Johan Cruijff ArenA before Ten Hag took the reins in 2017, but the Dutch international caps he won as a teenager marked him out as one of the Netherlands' top young talents.

After 18 months with Lille, the winger moved to Aston Villa on loan and helped them win promotion to the Premier League in 2019. He then spent three further years at Villa Park - including a brief loan spell at Everton - before joining PSV Eindhoven, but the Dutch side confirmed in September that his deal with the club had been terminated.

According to The Mail, there is interest in El Ghazi from Saudi Arabia. He may yet opt for United, though, if presented with a chance to return to the Premier League.

"PSV and Anwar El Ghazi would like to announce they have reached an agreement to dissolve the player’s contract by mutual consent," a PSV statement, published on September 4, read. "Anwar El Ghazi won the TOTO KNVB Cup and the Johan Cruijff Shield.

"The forward joined PSV from Aston Villa last season. He scored nine goals and had two assists in 33 matches for PSV in all competitions. The club wishes him the best of luck in his future career."

In addition to the situations facing Antony and Sancho, United have been without Mason Mount for a number of weeks. The summer signing suffered an injury in August, keeping him out of England's international fixtures against Ukraine and Scotland.

United's first game back after the international break sees them host Brighton, and it remains to be seen whether Ten Hag decides to bring Sancho back into the fold. The former Borussia Dortmund man hit back after the manager said he wasn't involved in the defeat at Arsenal due to his performances in training, and the back-and-forth has prompted suggestions the 23-year-old could leave in January.

"I have conducted myself in training very well this week," Sancho said after the defeat in North London. "I believe there are other reasons for this matter that I won't go into, I have been a scapegoat for a long time which isn't fair! All I want to do is play football with a smile on my face and contribute to my team."
