UFO mystery as UK skies hit by giant 'cloud flash' with 'repeat lightning bolts'

A huge flash of cloud in the sky along with several lightning bolts left people stumped over the weekend.

Footage was take of the bizarre event across the north of Gloucestershire on Sunday evening as some locals took to social media wondering exactly what it was. One clip appears to show a mystery object flying out of the cloud like something out of a sci-fi film.

In it, a long cloud is seen above house tops with repeated lightning in it before an object suddenly flashes out of the cloud from the left side of the frame. The 'UFO' was described as something that "must" be solid.

Mark Ravey from Longlevens, who captured the eerie scene, told GloucetershireLive: "At about 1:12 in the video as the car drives by, an object flies from the cloud left to right. Unsure what this is ... any ideas?"

Another witness, known as RavenWolf, took some photos of the cloud and said: "The storm had no sound and we spotted outer strange anomalies in the sky as well. The object you see must be solid because the lightning is not making it look transparent like the clouds."

While Jeff Mays believed that the answer to the mystery was more mundane that alien: "I watched the whole episode from Abbeymead and observed an aircraft fly left and right along the cloud, and it also flew towards and away from the cloud. I assume it was the Met Office aircraft probing the unusual weather feature."

It was reported that the phenomenon appeared to be something that is often called intra-cloud lightning, which is when lightning stays completely within the cloud. The same incident was also seen from parts of the West Midlands, Wales and the South West.
