Simon Jordan has called out former Man Utd captain Gary Neville over his criticism of the Glazer family, suggesting the club's problems go much deeper than the owners

Neville, who skippered the side in the early years of the Glazers' ownership, has been vocal in his criticism of United's owners in recent times. Last weekend, he accused them of 'depressing ambitions' at Old Trafford while treating the club 'like a toy'.

The last 10 months have seen the owners involved in a process to sell the club, but the outcome of that process remains up in the air amid fears they will now stay put.

In the 10 years since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement, United have failed to add another Premier League title, winning only a handful of trophies. The period has brought plenty of vocal criticism of the Glazers, with many elements of their ownership coming under scrutiny, but former Crystal Palace chairman Jordan thinks there's more to it.

"When Gary Neville dissects a defeat, the conversation is inevitably littered with observations about what the Glazers are doing wrong," Jordan wrote for The Mail. "No doubt this week's share-price plunge will be used as an excuse for poor form on the pitch at some stage.

"But while they make the ultimate appointments, the Glazers don't control the destiny of what the people they employ are doing. There's also far too much harking back to the Ferguson era, as if it's not abundantly obvious that, as with Sir Matt Busby, they had a once-in-a-generation manager.

"That Manchester United is dead," he added. "They can no longer outspend other sides or attract the best talent because there are plenty of other people that have the financial resources to lure players with the potential of achieving something."

Jordan also questioned whether Erik ten Hag was the man to end United's title drought, though he recognised Ferguson - and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp - took time to win their first trophies. "Time will tell if Ten Hag does [achieve things] but if he doesn't, it's not because the Glazers own Manchester United," he added. "No matter what Mr. Neville would have you believe."

Jordan's comments come after United suffered a second defeat in as many away games. Just four matches into the season, they trail leaders Manchester City by six points.

Speaking after United's last game, a 3-1 defeat at Arsenal, Neville remained convinced the Glazers would sell up and remained critical of their behaviour.

"It will seem I always mention the owners and I will because they are still messing around with this football club," he said on Sky Sports. "Imagine how unsettled it is behind the scenes, all the staff wondering if they have a job in six months if new owners come in. The players will be wondering if they will be sold and money will be spent if new owners come in.

"Imagine you are selling a business, it creates an unsettled environment and a toxicity that exists at United. The owners have created that. It is difficult to be successful if you have so much uncertainty at the top of the club. Today, United performed well and ultimately you can say that is nothing to do with the owners.

"But overall, it is not a successful football club because of what the owners have done. They have depressed ambitions."
