Good Morning Britain's Charlotte Hawkins revealed she was forced to step in for Susanna Reid on Wednesday in an "unscheduled appearance".

As the episode opened, presenter Ed Balls revealed his surprise that Charlotte, 48, was there as Susanna, 52, was in the studio and getting ready for the ITV show this morning. Explaining the last minute change, Charlotte revealed Susanna had in fact lost her voice as she appeared live via video in the studios.

Charlotte said: "Good morning to you, this is a bit of an unscheduled appearance for me this morning!", with Ed adding: "I was about to say, you know, I came into the studio as usual about 4:30am. Walked past Susanna Reid's dressing room. There was Susanna, as always, in her white dressing gown, getting ready for the show to come. This feels like a bit of a change!"

Explaining the reason, Charlotte added: "The reason is because you saw Susanna there but we couldn't hear her because she has unfortunately lost her voice! She is here in the building with us. Here she is, Susanna, how are you?" a croaky Susanna then appeared, saying: "I'm fine, I just can't speak!" to which Charlotte quipped: "Yes, so that was a bit of an impediment! What happened?"

Susanna, who struggled to speak, replied: "I don't know! I don't know whether it was the heat, inflaming my vocal cords. It's funny because of course it was the NTAs last night and when I got my cab to leave, the driver said: 'You're the very first person to leave the NTAs, you're obviously not partying'. Of course, I don't drink, I don't smoke, so there's no reason I can understand why I've completely lost my voice."

Charlotte replied: "The irony of it, we were all there together last night. You left first, you hadn't been drinking anything, I didn't leave as early as I should have done", Ed then added that Susanna, whose voice was fine last night, had left at 9pm and pointed out that her voice had deteriorated overnight.

Susanna added: "I'm really sorry, I can only apologise, but thank you Charlotte for stepping in! I didn't want to inflict this [her voice] on our wonderful viewers for a whole three hours." Charlotte then added: "Well listen, we hope you get well soon anyway, we'll get some emergency remedies for you! We will let you rest your voice, otherwise you'll lose it completely!"
