Jesse Lingard is set to return to the Premier League, with Wolves and West Ham ready to make offers to the midfielder.

Lingard is a free agent after being released in May following an underwhelming season at Nottingham Forest. That was his first campaign since leaving Manchester United permanently, though he struggled to make an impact at the City Ground.

Since being let go by Forest after just one year, the former England international has failed to find a new club. Instead, he has spent the summer training on his own as he works to find a way back into the game.

That search now appears to be drawing to a close, with Sky Sports reporting that both West Ham and Wolves are eyeing the midfielder. Lingard has been training with the Hammers in recent weeks and will play in a behind-close-doors friendly for the club this week.

The Englishman previously had a successful loan spell at the London Stadium in 2021 and surprised many by picking Forest over the Hammers last summer. But David Moyes' men are facing competition from Wolves.

The Premier League strugglers are said to be 'showing an interest' in the 30-year-old and could make an offer in the coming days. That will leave Lingard with a decision to make, with the two teams currently at opposite ends of the table.

He will be hoping to avoid making the same mistake as last summer, when he opted to join newly-promoted Forest. Despite failing to fire for the Midlands side, Lingard had insisted he had achieved his goal for the club.

"Thank you to everybody from the fans to all the back room staff and of course the players. Been a rollercoaster journey but we stuck together through thick and thin and achieved our goal. It’s been a pleasure," he posted on Instagram.

Wolves have been dealing with well-documented Financial Fair Play issues this summer, which saw manager Julen Lopetegui walk before the start of the campaign. But his replacement Gary O'Neil insisted that he was happy with the squad at Molineux upon taking the role.

“I don’t need any assurances, I haven’t asked for any. I understand the position of the football club, I will understand more when I have some conversations with people. But I understand exactly where it is at," he said.

“As far as outgoings and incomings... I haven’t got too many answers for you at this time. I am just going to work with the players that are here, work extremely hard and get as much out of them as possible.

“I signed up for the job two days ago with this group, so yes. It is a fantastic group, real good quality in it. From what I have seen so far, committed and together. I like the group, I really think we have a chance of doing something this year.”
