The Inbetweeners star James Buckley has shared the reason the show can never return.

After finding fame on the series 15 years ago, the 35-year-old explained that the programme couldn't be rebooted due to the characters now being in their thirties.

Originally, the actors played sixth form students, so James explained that the jokes back then were acceptable due to them being "idiots" but the same jokes wouldn't fly now.

James became a household name appearing on The Inbetweeners as he played the role of main character Jay Cartwright. The show ran for three series and two films.

It doesn't look like James is going to make a return to acting anytime soon as he has instead embarked on a career with his wife Clair.

The pair spoke to MailOnline about the release of their new weekly podcast In Sickness And In Health, which is a follow-up to their YouTube channel At Home With The Buckleys, which is when James talked about the programme that helped him find fame.

He said that the jokes on the show were "justified" due to the circumstances. He expained: "It was all justified because they were never the heroes. They were idiots and they got what they deserved. That's why it can't come back - you can't have men in their late thirties acting like they're in sixth form and getting away with that stuff."

Explaining his love for the show, James said: "I always get asked if I'd ever do more and I said 'For no amount of money' and that quote got run away. I didn't mean about money - it means more to me than money."

James works on Cameo, which is a platform where celebrities send messages to fans for a fee. Despite rejecting some requests, James has managed to make £1million on the app.

In 2022, he became the first UK celebrity to become a Cameo millionaire as he earned $1 million (£930,000). James said he is often asked to sing songs from The Inbetweeners or recite quotes but he often declines. However, he admitted that he tends to say no because he cannot remember the lines.
