Kate Middleton and Prince William broke long-standing royal protocol last year when it came to travelling to Balmoral for the Royal Family's annual summer holiday.

Passengers on a Scotland-bound flight last August were surprised to spot Kate flying economy along with Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. They weren't to know it at the time, but they were about to enjoy one last family trip with Her Majesty the Queen before she tragically died last September.

But what's also interesting about the sighting of Kate, Charlotte and Louis is that it means Prince George and Prince William were travelling together separately to the rest of the family. There has always been a rule in place among the royals that no two heirs to the throne should travel together, should the worst happen.

However, William has made something of a name for himself by regularly bending this rule with Prince George. It appears the 41-year-old dad can't get enough of travelling with his eldest son.

A surprised member of the public shared a video on TikTok of Kate disembarking the flight last year, in footage that soon went viral. The social media user said: "On a flight to Scotland, Kate Middleton, both kids, nanny and security 2 rows in front of me.

"Could get a private jet or helicopter but keeping it simple, flying economy. She even got up halfway through the flight to get her daughter's iPad.

"And yes she was stunning, even gave me a smile while looking back at row behind her to talk to her son. No one on board took any photos or videos. Just a mum taking her children on holiday to see grandmother, but there was a buzz on board."

The royal custom of spending the last few weeks of the summer break at the opulent highland residence has a long history that dates back to when Queen Victoria bought the estate.

On their flight there last year, Kate was seen wearing a midi skirt, khaki blazer and cream shoulder bag. Charlotte wore a floral dress, while Louis was smart in navy shorts and a blue shirt.
