Ten Hag confirms ruthless Sancho call as £73m Man Utd star dropped again

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag confirmed that Jadon Sancho wasn't picked on Sunday because his training form wasn't good enough.

The forward, who cost the club £73m back in the summer of 2021, was dealt another blow after he was left out of the matchday squad for the loss at Arsenal with the likes of Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Anthony Martial all picked ahead of the Englishman.

Sancho has been unable to replicate the form he showed so regularly at Borussia Dortmund, often lighting up the Bundesliga with goals and assists. Those numbers have eluded him since his move to Manchester and Ten Hag refused to select the player who he's not been impressed with at Carrington.

He said: "On his performance on training we didn't select him. You have to reach the level every day at Manchester United. You can make choices in the front line, so in this game he wasn't selected."

Last term Sancho started 21 times in the Premier League, 29 times in all competitions, but only scored on seven occasions as he failed to make himself a guaranteed starter at Old Trafford. His inconsistent form has cost him his place in the England squad with a host of players now ahead of him in the pecking order.

That appears to now be the case at United with Ten Hag picking a number of players ahead of Sancho, who has only scored 12 times since moving to Manchester. The Dutch coach appeared to be content with the 23-year-old's development last year as he sought more going forward.

He said back in May: “I think Jadon Sancho was one of the players who [has made good] progress in this season. And there were many players in our squad who made good progress. I think it's a good base to build further on."

That though came after Sancho was sent away on an individual training programme during the World Cup period back in December. Those members of the United squad not in Qatar headed out on a warm weather camp, but Sancho was sent off individually after a somewhat scathing assessment.

Ten Hag said at the time: "We didn’t see him in the last games for United as he wasn’t in the right fitness state and he is now on an individual programme. We want him to finish that and hopefully see him back soon. We want to bring him back as quickly as possible but I can’t give a prognosis of when that will be."

He added: "When the league started he played some good games, but after we got a drop of levels. Sometimes you don't know why or what is causing it. Most of the time it comes slowly. First you observe but the stats back it up. In the start of the season he had goals and assists but his key moments and key actions became less and less. It's a combination of physical but also mental. We're trying to research and get him back."
