Parents asked to see if they can notice why a school sent this lunch box back

With the summer holidays ending and the autumn term starting next week for most pupils, many parents will be quickly trying to get everything in order for the new school year from stationery to uniforms, books, and of course, their children's school lunches.

There are many options out there and most parents do their best to keep school lunches as healthy and nutritious as possible which can be a task if your child is a fussy eater. For health-conscious mum Laura Lee, her efforts were wasted when her son's school sent back his lunchbox because they deemed it "too unhealthy."

The puzzled mother was left confused by the rejection of her son's offering that included a well-balanced meal made up of fruit and veg. She was later told that the lunch did not meet their standards as it included three mini cookies.

Speaking to Cornwall Live, Laura Lee said that her son was allowed to eat the lunch but not the cookies and posted a picture of the lunch on Facebook with the comment: "I thought it was pretty balanced. Evidently not."

On the viral post, comments from other parents poured in with fellow parent Stephanie Hughes writing: "Amazing, when a child's free school lunch can have syrup sponge and custard for a pudding. Not complaining as my child does have free school meals at the moment and to be fair, they seem ok and she is having lots of veg and fruit but if the free school meal children can have cake and custard for afters then why can't a packed lunch child (with a lovely lunch as above) have some cookies? It's not like it's a chocolate bar."

Stephanie added: "I would be requesting a lunch date with the headmaster, asking him to provide a proper packed lunch as a way of example!" Mum Christina Robinson added: "That looks great and well balanced, my son's drink got sent home because it was fizzy, it was sparkling water."

Wayne Sharrocks wrote: "I work in a nursery and believe me; I have seen some terrible packed lunches in the past! This looks perfect to me! Some settings are quite militant with the healthy packed lunches, and it sounds like your son's setting is one of those places! Children need a bit of sugar in their diet!"

Teachers previously shared details of the worst ever packed lunches they have seen, with one child being sent to school with a can of cider and one with a pork pie and a can of shandy because "that's all there was in the fridge." Other bad lunch finds include cold McDonald's Happy Meals, Red Bull with a bag of Monster Munch, and a pack of ginger biscuits.

What do you think of the mum's lunch offering for her child? Let us know in the comments.
