Man feels 'deprived' after finding out girlfriend's real name after two years

Choosing a name for a baby is an important decision. The name will follow them forever unless they decide to change it and opinions are often formed about a person based on the name that they have been given. Some people choose to name their children after other family members, others are inspired by celebrity baby names or television characters. Olivia and Noah were the most popular baby names in 2022 according to Nameberry.

One Reddit user has been left feeling 'deprived' after just learning the real name of their girlfriend of two years. "I've been dating my girlfriend for two years", they wrote. "I've always called her Loz but know that her full name is Lauren." But they were shocked when they got their "new ID through" and saw the actual spelling.

"I saw a mighty eye sore before me - it's spelled 'Lawr'ryn'", they admitted. The story was posted to Reddit's 'Tragedeigh' thread where users swap stories about a "given name that has been deliberately misspelled or made up for the sake of appearing unique."

To the Redditor's surprise, the popular name of his girlfriend was spelled uniquely and as for the rest of Lawr'ryn's family, the distinct naming tradition does not stop with her. "Turns out her parents were menaces when naming their children", writes the Redditor who spent an evening laughing and grilling their girlfriend on why this information was not shared sooner.

"Her younger sister is called Percy and has always spelled it Percy in texts, online, in cards etc. However, the 'real' spelling is Pur'see. She also has an older brother who seemed to escape the apostrophe curse but not the awful spelling, and his very normal name of Daniel (goes by Danny) is spelled Dhaniyel."

"I cannot stop chuckling", wrote the user, “Three tragedeigh's in one family." Commenters also enjoyed a laugh at the names, with one writing: "Your poor girlfriend.... no wonder she goes by a nickname my lord." Another added: "Thank you for destroying your relationship to post these horrific names."

Sharing their own experience with unique name spellings, one user chimed in and wrote: "There's a Chloe at my school…named Khloeigh. Also, a Makayla…named Makeighluh." Another said: "I would at least have genetic tests done to make sure she can't pass it to the children."
