Drivers can sign up for petrol loyalty schemes - just like supermarket schemes - to cut their petrol costs.

Petrol prices have once again gone up to the highest they have been since the start of the year. According to the RAC, the average price for unleaded petrol is 152.25p a litre, while for diesel it’s 154.37p.

If you are looking to save money when filling up your car, then it may be worth signing up for a fuel loyalty scheme. Major supermarkets also allow you to collect points through their own membership cards, which you can save up to spend in stores. Here we explain everything you need to know.

Esso

Rather than running its own loyalty programme, Esso runs a partnership with Sainsbury's Nectar and Tesco Clubcard.

You can collect and spend Nectar points at many Esso locations receiving one Nectar point for every litre of fuel you purchase. You can also collect two Nectar points for every £1 spent in the Esso shop and on its carwash. You can collect the points by putting a minimum of ten litres of fuel into your car and either paying through the Esso App or by scanning your Nectar card.

You can get 5p off each litre of fuel you buy for every 300 Nectar points you have.

Currently, Esso is giving people 500 points when they first use the Esso app. All they need to do is make sure their Nectar card is added to the app and the 500 points will be added into the account the next time you top up with petrol.

As well as this, Esso is also running a special bonus scheme. The Esso website states, "Your 2nd, 4th, and 6th refills will earn you two, four and six times the Nectar points respectively. Once you’ve hit your 8th refill, you’ll get a bonus 500 points on top. If you refill eight times while the offer is still running don’t worry, the offer will reset and start again once your offer period has ended."

For Tesco shoppers, you can collect Clubcard points at nearly 200 stores by tapping your card when you pay for fuel or shop in a Tesco Express shop. You'll collect one Clubcard point for every £3 spent on Esso fuel where there is a Tesco Express shop. You can also collect points when you pay at the pump too. For car washes or any other in-store purchases, you collect one point for every £1 you spend.

Shell Go+

If you regularly fill up at Shell, then there is the Shell Go+ loyalty scheme which allows you to "earn visits instead of points". By spending £10 or more on fuel - or £2 or more in the shop - you’ll get money off fuel every ten visits. You can bag an even bigger discount if you buy Shell V-Power fuel, as you get an extra £3 off every 300 litres you buy.

You’ll also get 10% off food ranges on the go, hot drinks, Shell Helix Motor Oil, Shell Super Shine car wash or Quick wash. You can download the app to get your digital loyalty card or you can request a key fob and card if you prefer.

BPme Rewards

The BPme app allows you to earn points you can redeem on fuel, in-store, or with specific partners. You get two points for every litre of Ultimate fuel you purchase, or one point for every litre of regular fuel. In addition, you earn one point for every £1 spent in the shop.

On BP's website, it says 200 points are equivalent to £1, which means you'll need to spend £200 on regular fuel or shopping to get a £1 discount. You must also earn at least 25 base points before you start redeeming your BPme Reward Points on eligible purchases.

Once you’ve collected 25 base points, you can redeem your points in-store or on fuel. You can also redeem your points for vouchers with some of BP's rewards partners. You can get either an Amazon gift card, a Love2shop voucher or a M&S gift card. Alternatively, you can also convert your points to Avios points for flights.

At the moment, you can also get £2.50 by downloading the BPme app and registering to get a digital card. You can also pick up a plastic card in-store and register it online.

Texaco

Texaco runs its own loyalty scheme called Star Rewards, where you earn points when you spend on fuel. Buying one litre of fuel gets you one point, which is worth 1p. You can then redeem 500 points and get a £5 reward.

You then have some options when it comes to cashing in those points. Similarly to BP’s scheme, you can redeem your points into vouchers through the Love2Shop scheme for places such as M&S, Curry's, Argos and Boots.

Alternatively, you could donate the value of those points to a range of charities, including The Trussell Trust, Age UK and FareShare. What’s more, if you opt to donate them, Texaco will match the value of your donation.

To sign up you will need to download the Texaco app, and to collect points you will need to scan it every time you fill up your car. You’ll get 200 points for getting the app and registering, as well as double points on the first three fill-ups. You can also request a physical card or key fob if you don't want just the app.

Tesco Clubcard

Tesco Clubcard members can use their points to get money off the petrol they buy at the supermarket's forecourts. At a Tesco Petrol Filling Station, you can collect one point for every two litres of fuel you buy.

This wasn't always the case, before June 14 you got one point for every £2 you spent on fuel. With the current price of petrol, the change meant you had to spend more on fuel to get the points. However if the price of petrol drops, then customers will earn more points under the new scheme.

Once you have built up your points you can then exchange them into Tesco Clubcard vouchers which can then be spent on fuel at all Tesco petrol stations. So if you have a £3 voucher, you can spend it on £3 worth of fuel.

The Clubcard scheme is free to join, and you can earn points on your spending in Tesco stores. The supermarket chain also gives discounts to Clubcard members so you can cut prices there too.

Sainsbury's Nectar points

Just like Tesco, you can collect and spend Nectar points at Sainsbury's forecourt stations. Drivers get one Nectar points for every one point for every litre of fuel they buy at Sainsbury's whilst they get one point for every £1 they spend at the supermarket chain. To collect the points all you need to do is swipe your Nectar card when you are paying.

You can then spend your points on petrol when you fill up your car at Sainsbury's. However, you can only spend your points when paying for fuel at the petrol kiosk and cannot be spent when paying at the pump.

You can visit the Sainsbury's website to find your nearest store and use the filters to display the ones with petrol stations.
