Mohamed Al-Fayed was “very, very ill” before he died but will now finally be at peace with son Dodi and Princess Diana, his friend Uri Geller said tonight.

The late Egyptian billionaire and former owner of Harrods and Fulham FC passed away, aged 94, on Wednesday – just hours before the 26th anniversary of the fatal car crash that claimed the couple’s lives. Spoon-bending psychic Uri, 76, believes the timing was no coincidence.

He told us: “He is now with his son and Princess Diana. “He totally believed in life after death. He was an open minded person. “It’s extraordinary that he died a day before Princess Diana’s and Dodi’s deaths. “To me this is a sign from above from Dodi and Diana, 26 years later. This is incredible. “Who knows, maybe he himself timed his death to coincide with the deaths of his son and Princess Diana.”

Al-Fayed was laid to rest by Dodi in a tomb on the family’s 226-acre estate in Oxted, Surrey, on Friday. He is believed to have left a £1.6billion fortune to his wife Heini Wathén, 68, and their four children. But he had only a modest priate funeral at London’s Central Mosque. Uri, who knew Al-Fayed for nearly 50 years, believes his friend wanted a simple service.

He said: “When you become so powerful, wealthy and recognisable, I think you want to die quietly.” It is understood Al-Fayed’s final years were blighted by dementia. Uri said: “I knew months and months ago that he was very, very ill. “You really couldn’t speak to him for quite a few years now. “His daughter is a good friend of my daughter, Natalie, so I knew what was happening. It is sad... for millions of people.”

School inspector’s son Al- Fayed rose from selling fizzy drinks on the streets of Egyptian city Alexandria, to becoming one of the richest men in the world. His big break came when he met first wife Samira Khashoggi and was employed by her brother, millionaire Saudi arms dealer Adnan.

Al-Fayed went on to launch his own shipping business and moved to Britain in 1974. In 1985, he and his brother Ali bought Harrods for £615m. And in 1997, Al-Fayed bought London club Fulham FC. Fans today paid tribute with banners at the club’s match against Manchester City and players wore black armbands as they lost 5-1.

Al-Fayed was tormented by the deaths of Dodi and Diana in the Paris tunnel crash on August 31, 1997. Uri said his friend was “destroyed” when he lost his son and “cried for months... alone by the grave”. Al-Fayed, who claimed Dodi was about to get engaged to Diana, never stopped believing they were killed by security services.

He sparked outrage at Diana’s 2008 inquest, when he alleged the Royal Family murdered her – a claim ruled a conspiracy theory by the coroner. He also courted controversy in 2011 when he unveiled a statue of his late pal Michael Jackson, who had faced child abuse claims, outside Fulham stadium Craven Cottage.

In 2017, Al-Fayed was interviewed by police after a string of women accused him of sexual assault. He became reclusive after the claims were m a d e public and was not seen again. Uri insisted his friend was a wonderful man who “helped a lot of sick people and children”.

Apprentice star Lord Alan Sugar paid tribute online and recalled how Al-Fayed had been a guest at his wife’s 50th. He wrote on X: “My father-in-law didn’t know who he was, I introduced him as the bloke who has the big corner shop in Knightsbridge. R.I.P.”
