Man Utd sign Sergio Reguilon as Erik ten Hag completes deadline day transfer
Erik ten Hag has confirmed Manchester United have completed a Deadline Day transfer to sign Sergio Reguilon on loan from Tottenham.
Reguilon, 26, passed his medical on Thursday and is hopeful of featuring in Ten Hag's squad for Sunday's Premier League trip to Arsenal - although the deal has yet to be announced by the club. The loan deal will last for the course of the season but will include a January break clause and while no fee is involved, United will cover his wages for the duration of his loan.
United had been on the lookout for a new left-back due to injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, while Brandon Williams has left Old Trafford to join Ipswich on a season-long loan deal. Diogo Dalot, primarily a right-back, deputised in the position in Saturday’s home win over Nottingham Forest.
Ten Hag said at his Friday press conference: "He (Reguilon) is a very experienced player, (he has played at ) big clubs, La Liga, Premier League, he has a very good background, he can play intense football. We had a problem with Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia injured, we coped well in an emergency situation."
The United boss added of the left-back's arrival: “We responded very well on that emergency situation.”
Marcel Sabitzer completes Man Utd transfer after last-minute deadline day dashThe Red Devils had monitored a move for Reguilon three years ago before he joined Spurs from Real Madrid. The Spaniard had starred on a loan spell for Sevilla as they went on to win the Europa League in 2020 – including a semi-final win over United.
Ten Hag had drawn up a four-player shortlist for the position which consisted of Reguilon – who has returned to Tottenham following a loan spell at Atletico Madrid last season - alongside Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella and Barcelona ’s Marcos Alonso, formerly of Chelsea, while Villarreal’s Alfonso Pedraza had also been linked.
It was believed that Cucurella was the preferred target but his inclusion for Chelsea in Wednesday’s 2-1 win over AFC Wimbledon changed that plan. That appearance ensured he would not be able to be loaned out again later in the season should he return to Stamford Bridge in January.
Reguilon progressed through Real Madrid’s youth system and made 22 first-team appearances for the club, all of which came in the 2018-19 campaign. He spent the subsequent campaign on loan at Sevilla, where he starred at full-back and helped them win the Europa League title.
He joined Spurs on a permanent deal from Madrid in the summer of 2020 on a five-year deal. He made 67 appearances for the north London club, scoring twice, while featuring 12 times on loan at Atletico Madrid last term.
