Greenwood handed late Deadline Day transfer option as club enter Man Utd talks
Lazio are in talks with Manchester United over a deal for Mason Greenwood.
The Italian club are determined to get a deal done but there is still interest from other European clubs. Olympiacos have also explored a deal while Besiktas have looked at a possible loan after United made him available.
Greenwood will have the final say but is running out of time to get a deal done. The forward is set to leave Old Trafford with the Red Devils confirming that they would help him facilitate a move away from the club this summer after concluding an internal investigation.
An official statement from United said: “All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”
Now, it appears that a switch to Serie A could be on the agenda. According to various reports over in Italy, Lazio were initially offered the chance to sign Greenwood before the end of the transfer window.
Marcel Sabitzer completes Man Utd transfer after last-minute deadline day dashIt was claimed that they would sign him on a free transfer from the Red Devils and he is open to a move to the Stadio Olimpico - but a loan move now looks more likely. The decision is now with former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri.

Greenwood would be competing with club icon Ciro Immobile should he become a Lazio player. A move would also bring to an end the academy graduate’s spell at Old Trafford.
The 21-year-old had made 129 appearances for United and scored 35 goals before he was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour in January 2022. That subsequently saw him suspended by the Red Devils. Those charges were then dropped.
Now, it appears he could be set to continue his career in Italy. Should a deal go through, it appears highly unlikely that he will make his debut any time soon. Lazio take on reigning Italian champions Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Saturday evening.
Domestic football in Italy then pauses for the upcoming international break. Greenwood currently has one cap to his name after making his England debut in September 2020 under Gareth Southgate.
The Three Lions boss was asked about Greenwood’s future during his latest squad announcement and confirmed that the striker was not being considered for the time being. Speaking in a press conference, he said: “It’s clearly a very complex case. He’s not playing so it’s not a consideration for us. It’s hypothetical. Whatever I say will be used in a less nuanced fashion frankly.”
