Alarming footage has been shared online of a group of masked thugs armed with poles attacking a delivery driver.

The cyclist, wearing what appears to be a Just Eat delivery bag, is thrown to the floor in the video, published on Instagram. Two hooded youths attempt to steal the man's bicycle and a third thug intervenes. Two of the yobs repeatedly appear to strike the victim with makeshift weapons.

But despite the three men ganging up on him, the delivery driver does not let the bike out of his hands. The group then suddenly react to cars beeping their horns and flee down the road, thought to be in Leicester, without getting hold of the bike.

The delivery driver has been praised for his bravery and determination not to give into the violence. One social media user said: "Good on the delivery man for holding on." Another said: "Three of them with weapons and the guy held on like a hero."

A third commented: "Three men and they cant even grab a bike then run off because of honking." A fourth said: "People really think beeping their cars is gonna make a difference." The honking, did though, appear to startle the brutes who fled seconds after motorists became concerned.

Other social media users were worried that drivers didn't get out of their cars to help the victim. Since it was uploaded to Instagram on Monday, the clip has been viewed more than 2,200 times.

A Just Eat spokesperson said: "We are deeply concerned to hear about this attack involving a courier and we are investigating. The safety and welfare of couriers delivering on our behalf is of utmost importance for us and we will of course support the relevant authorities investigating this incident. We urge any witnesses with information about this crime to come forward and contact the authorities." Mirror has approached Leicestershire Police and Just Eat for comment.
