Drivers who are going to be affected by the expansion of the ULEZ scheme could be entitled to up to £2,000 to replace their cars.

The Ultra Low Emissions Zone is expanding across all London boroughs from today, meaning many more drivers will face a £12.50 daily charge. ULEZ targets high-polluting vehicles - typically older cars - and is aimed at improving the air quality in London. Previously, ULEZ covered all areas within the North and South Circular Roads - but this is being expanded from August 29.

If you're going to be affected by ULEZ, you may be able to claim from a scrappage scheme that is designed to help drivers replace non-compliant cars. You can apply for a grant by filling in a form on the TfL website, with the money being awarded on a first come, first served basis.

You will be eligible for the scrappage scheme - which is worth £160million - if you live in London and have a car that does not comply with ULEZ.

You can check if your car is liable for the ULEZ charge here. Enter your number plate to find your vehicle. If you drive within the zone, you'll have to pay by midnight on the third day following the journey.

Those living in London can apply for up to £2,000 for scrapping a car, or up to £1,000 for a motorcycle. Wheelchair accessible vehicles may be eligible for £10,000 or £6,000 to retrofit to the ULEZ standards.

Drivers can also choose to include a lower payment, plus one or two adult-rate Annual Bus and Tram Passes. For vans and minibuses owned by small businesses, sole traders and registered charities., the grant payment is worth between £6,000 and £11,500.

Nearly 700,000 drivers in Greater London could be liable to pay the ULEZ charge from next week, according to the RAC. If you don't pay the ULEZ charge, you could be issued a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) of £180. This is reduced to £90 if paid within 14 days.

You don’t need to pay ULEZ if you are parked within the zone and don’t drive on that day. You can pay the ULEZ fee through the TFL website.
