Tories risk rail harm

SHUTTING train ticket offices would be unforgivable when even rail operators admit the closures would hurt disabled, elderly and vulnerable passengers.

Our revelations today strengthen the case for keeping open facilities that are used and valued instead of axing what is clearly a vital cog in the public transport service. The consultation extended after legal action threatened by Labour mayors and the Daily Mirror’s sustained campaign is revealing massive public opposition to the vandalism.

We urge the bosses of train companies who know the truth to speak out. And when MPs return to Parliament next Monday, the Transport Minister in charge of the closure programme, Huw Merriman, must be dragged to the despatch box and forced to answer searching questions. Because the safety and welfare of travellers are too important to sacrifice to Tory cuts.

Tag Braverman

SACKED for security breaches then cynically reappointed by weak Rishi Sunak, dangerously incompetent Suella Braverman isn’t fit to be Home Secretary. Failing at every turn, particularly on net migration, Braverman’s latest PR scam to force asylum seekers to wear electronic tags is both unworkable and immoral.

Perhaps it will never happen, and isn’t really intended to, serving to make her appear to be doing something, but once again we see Braverman hasn’t any real answers. Fixing the system and clearing the huge backlog of 175,000 claims should be her priority yet this Home Secretary prefers to play political games. The person who should be tagged is flailing Braverman herself.

Crock and roll

Best wishes to music legend Elton John who is in hospital after a fall at his home. Hopefully nothing is broken after the star’s accident in Nice on the French Riviera. We wouldn’t want him to end up singing I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Bruise...
