Manchester United have put together a three-man left-back shortlist that includes Marc Cucurella, Sergio Reguilon and Marcos Alonso.

The Red Devils are desperate for more support in defence following the injury suffered by Luke Shaw. The England star is set to be sidelined for a few weeks with a muscle injury.

His deputy Tyrell Malacia is also ruled out and is unlikely to return for a few weeks after missing all of pre-season. Elsewhere, Erik ten Hag can no longer call upon academy graduate Brandon Williams after he was allowed to join Championship side Ipswich Town on loan.

That led to the United boss naming Diogo Dalot at left-back in Saturday’s win over Nottingham Forest, a position in which the Portuguese international struggled. As a result, the Red Devils have turned to the transfer market and will attempt to draft in more support ahead of Friday’s deadline.

According to The Telegraph, United have three options on their shortlist. Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella is chief amongst them with a tentative enquiry having reportedly been lodged.

The Spaniard only arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer for £60m from Brighton but has struggled to make an impact. He has not played a minute under new boss Mauricio Pochettino.

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea would sanction a move to a direct rival. Interestingly, a former Chelsea left-back is also on United’s shortlist in the form of Marcos Alonso who is currently with Barcelona.

He moved to Catalonia 12 months ago and made 37 appearances in his debut campaign as Barcelona claimed the title. Alonso was previously linked with a move away from the club but reports in Spain suggested that Xavi had assured him of his place in the side.

One final option is thought to be Tottenham left-back Sergio Reguilon. He is currently out of favour in North London and spent last season on loan with Atletico Madrid.

Fulham are also reportedly interested in him but look set to sign Belgian international Timothy Castagne from Leicester, which could open the door to Man United. Intriguingly, the Red Devils have also been linked with a move for another ex-Leicester star.

The Express have reported that United have been weighing up an offer for Ryan Bertrand, who is a free agent following his exit from the King Power Stadium. He could link up with former teammate Jonny Evans - the centre-back set to pen a one-year deal.

Speaking out on contact talks earlier this month, Ten Hag said: "We will see. We are in talks and when we have news, we will bring that, as always.

"In this moment, [he’s] not [under a long-term contract]. I have to say, it's a short [deal] for this month, he’s under contract. But we are talking."
