A chemistry student has been accused of using a syringe to inject an opioid chemical agent underneath a neighbours door. The bizarre incident was picked up on a hidden camera and discovered after family members reported feeling unwell.

Umar Abdullah and his pregnant wife moved into their new flat in Tampa, Florida, in June 2022 and despite getting on well with most of the other residents in the building began arguing with their downstairs neighbour.

Mr Abdullah started getting text messages from downstairs neighbour, Xuming Li, complaining about losing sleep because he could hear a toilet seat move. Other Li seemed like a “regular guy” but after months of quarrelling, Abdullah said, his family including his newborn daughter started feeling dizzy and vomiting.

“I look at my daughter,” Mr Abdullah told WFLA. “Her eyes were full of tears. She was not crying, but her eyes were full of tears.” A visitor to the flat noticed a chemical smell while picking up a package, something he described as more “obnoxious” than nail polish remover.

Multiple handymen, from the air conditioning repair to plumbing, found nothing wrong and nothing anyone could do could get rid of the smell.

The concerned homeowner said: “I never thought after all this that no. I’m just imagining this. No.”

He was so desperate to get to the bottom of it that he “started sniffing that place like a dog..” which was when he found a small crack in the corner of his front door.

He set up the camera outside and his daughter fell sick again he checked the footage. It showed Yi holding a syringe and crouching outside his door.

“We were shaking,” Mr Abdullah recalled to WFLA. “We can’t imagine that he is coming and doing something.” After correcting the camera angle he documented Yi take a syringe out, fill it with liquid, and then inject the liquid into the crack in the door frame.

Abdullah immediately got his family out of there and called the police. Officers arrested Li and he was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and burglary.

A test revealed the “liquid chemical agent” contained a combination of two opioid pain medications - methadone and hydrocodone.

Li is registered as a chemistry student at the University of Southern Florida, but the college said he had not been enrolled since the summer 2023 semester ended.

He has been released on bail and is set to return to court on December 5.

He is also facing a lawsuit from Abdullah for domestic violence and from the condo association.

Mr Abduallah and his family are hoping to move away after the whole ordeal.
