Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea appears to have hit out at Luis Rubiales on social media after the president of the Spanish FA refused to quit on Friday.

Rubiales was expected to announce his resignation after kissing Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the celebrations following last weekend's World Cup final, which was won by Spain. However, Rubiales instead took the opportunity to defend his actions, claiming the kiss - which he described as a "peck" - was "consensual".

De Gea, a former Spanish international with 45 caps, quickly made his feelings clear after hearing Rubiales' shameful speech. The veteran tweeted: "My ears are bleeding", complete with emojis which are widely associated with a circus, seemingly in direct response to Rubiales.

Despite Rubiales' claims, Hermoso herself has been vocal on the incident which tainted Spain's success in Australia. The 33-year-old said she "did not enjoy it" and later called for Rubiales' actions to 'not go unpunished'.

It had widely been reported that Rubiales would step down on Friday, with Pedro Rocha in line to replace him as president of the Federation. It soon became clear, though, that Rubiales had no intention of standing down from his role.

After giving his version of events, Rubiales repeatedly shouted "I will not resign" to leave onlookers and social media stunned. He said: "There are many people who, although silenced, are continuing to support me a lot.

"This is the body that elected me and the body to which I must give explanations. I want to thank everyone for the messages of support that you have sent me, there have been many messages that I have received."

After defending himself over another incident which occurred in the VIP box where he was sitting during the match, Rubiales moved on to his kiss with Hermoso, where he eventually dubbed the outrage over the incident as "fake feminism".

He continued: "I want to give my explanation about the peck (small kiss), it was a peck. The desire that I could have giving that kiss was the same desire that I could have giving my daughter a kiss, here there was no dominance."

"It was spontaneous, mutual and consensual. It was consensual. I have a great relationship with all the players and we had very affectionate moments in this tournament. The moment Jenni appeared, she picked me up from the ground and when she left me we hugged and I told her forget about the penalty, you've been fantastic in this World Cup and she told me you're a star, I told her a little bit? and it happened.

"Here they are not trying to do justice, they are doing a social murder.

"For five years they have been after me with everything. Complaints, lawsuits and requests for me to step down. False feminism does not seek the truth, it seeks to portray itself that it is moving us forward. They do not care about people."
