A nine-month-old baby tragically lost her life due to an 'unsafe sleep environment' at a nursery, a coroner heard.

Genevieve Zophia Meehan died in May 2022 at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport following the incident at Tiny Toes Nursery in Cheadle, Greater Manchester.

Kate Roughley of Heaton Norris, was subsequently charged with unlawful act manslaughter in connection to the death on August 18, 2023.

Today, senior coroner Alison Mutch opened an inquest in Stockport, as reported by the Manchester Evening News, where a police coroner's officer confirmed the cause of Genevieve's death.

Alison Catlow told the court: "The cause of death offered by Dr Lumb was a combination of asphyxia and patho-physiological stress, imparted by an unsafe sleep environment."

She added: "Currently a female who was the carer has been charged and is due to appear in Crown Court on September 19."

Expressing her condolences, the coroner addressed Genevieve's grieving parents, John Meehan and Katie Wheeler, saying: "Thank you for coming today and I am so terribly sorry to see you in these circumstances."
