Laura Woods could not resist the opportunity to tease James Maddison for moving to Tottenham instead of her beloved Arsenal.

The former Leicester star completed a £40m switch to the white half of North London following the Foxes’ relegation to the Championship earlier this summer. He has already enjoyed a bright start to life with Spurs having notched two assists on his debut, before then helping Ange Postecoglou’s side to victory over Manchester United on his home debut.

It could all have been very different for Maddison, who could have been representing Arsenal instead. The Gunners were regularly linked with a move for the playmaker in the past.

That is something that Woods made sure to mention to Maddison when interviewing him for TNT Sports. She said: “Another thing that Ally [McCoist] and me I think share is a real joy of watching you play football. It’s not just football; obviously we love your interviews and your personality in general. Which is why the question, why Spurs? Like why did you decide to go to Spurs? Come on!”

Maddison laughed in response before saying: “Didn’t take long! That didn’t take long, did it? Arsenal fan, Laura, in case we didn’t know,” to which Woods then said: “Congratulations first and foremost, I’m only jealous because I wanted you to come to us!”

Woods’ TNT Sports colleague McCoist then interjected with his comments. The former Rangers star asked: “What happened to the congratulations, well done, are you enjoying your move?”

“Honestly, congratulations, yep…” Woods then said before giving Maddison an opportunity to finally explain his move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He said: “Listen, you get to… you didn’t mean that, did you [laughs]?

“I got to the point at Leicester and my time at Leicester didn’t finish the way I wanted it to. We obviously went down in the end which was very disappointing and very sad.

“I wanted to end on a good note and go out on a positive. It wasn’t meant to be but you get to those parts in life where you get set back and this was the next step for me.

“Like I’ve said in a few interviews and stuff people have asked like ‘Why Spurs’ and what not. You have to make decisions. You come to points in your life not just in work but in life as well, where you have to make decisions. I could see myself playing for Spurs and could see myself as a Tottenham player as much as that might annoy you, Laura.

“And I’m really happy. It’s a brilliant club and it’s a big club and you feel that when you arrive. I’ve been made to feel very welcome and stuff. Hopefully we can have success on the pitch now.”

Maddison and his Tottenham teammates will be hoping to make it back-to-back wins this weekend as they take on Bournemouth. The midfielder is a slight doubt having been pictured in a protective boot after the win over Man United, whilst he also missed the club’s latest training session.
