Man Utd face fresh setback over Andre Onana as Erik ten Hag problems grow

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is set to return to the international fold with Cameroon – meaning that he may miss up to a month of the season due to the African Cup of Nations.

Onana retired from international duty with his nation after supposedly clashing with manager Rigobert Song regarding the side’s playing style. The goalkeeper, who has won 34 caps for Cameroon, was dropped for the group stage match against Serbia.

The west African nation’s No.1 in Onana’s absence has been former Barcelona B and Sevilla B goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa, but there is little doubt that Onana would be instilled as first-choice should a resolution be found and he could return to the international fold.

A report in Actu Cameroun outlines how the nation’s government has been reaching out to the United goalkeeper to convince him return to the setup. There is a belief that Onana will accept the proposal and could even return for next month’s friendly against Burundi.

From a United point of view, they will be wary that Onana may miss a month of the season as the AFCON runs from January 13 through to February 11. It comes as Fenerbahce goalkeeper Altay Bayindir underwent a medical ahead of a proposed move to United – where he would theoretically provide backup to Onana.

Tensions between the Cameroon goalkeeper and his national boss reportedly boiled over following their World Cup opening defeat to Switzerland. Onana said on the situation: “I put all my efforts and my energy into unravelling the situation, but I did not get the reception I expected. I want to express my affection for my country and the Indomitable Lions.

“Some moments are difficult to understand. However, I always consider and respect the decisions of the people responsible for the management and supervision of our team."

Onana was sent home from the World Cup on November 28 by manager Song due to a disciplinary issue related to arguments about the latter's coaching tactics. On December 23, the goalkeeper then released a statement to confirm his retirement from the international team.

"Every story, however beautiful it may be, has its end. And my story with the Cameroonian national trams has come to an end. Players come and go, names are fleeting, but Cameroon comes before any person or player. Cameroon remains eternal and so does my love for the national team and for our people who have always supported us no matter how difficult the moment was.

"My feeling will never change. My Cameroonian heart will continue to beat and wherever I go I will always fight to lift the flag of Cameroon as high as possible. I will continue to support as a fan, just as the more than 27 million Cameroonians do at every match. I can only thanks all those who trusted me and believed that I could add and contribute to this team."
