Jadon Sancho and Antony have been told that their days at Manchester United could be numbered after a tricky start to the season.

The Red Devils have endured an inconsistent start to the new campaign, with a win and a defeat apiece. Erik ten Hag ’s men have struggled in particular from an attacking sense.

Their lucrative signings Sancho and Antony have been guilty of not meeting the standards expected of them so far. The England man - signed from Borussia Dortmund for £73m two years ago - has not yet started for United this term. Elsewhere, Brazilian wideman Antony has flattered to deceive since his own big-money switch from Ajax.

Garth Crooks has pointed to Brighton star Kaoru Mitoma as an example of the sort of performances the Red Devils’ pair should be producing, and has predicted the Japanese international to be a target for United at some point in the future.

Speaking after Mitoma’s stunning solo goal against Wolves at the weekend, he said: “What a goal. The run, control and quality of finish against Wolves were world-class. In fact Mitoma has been producing this type of form with such regularity that I can't believe he's still on the south coast.

“Manchester United have Jadon Sancho and Antony in their ranks and I haven't seen anything like the quality or ability from either of those two players that I have seen from this lad. How do United get it so wrong? I accept that Old Trafford is a daunting stage and the stakes are much higher there, but Mitoma is a United player if ever I saw one.”

Mitoma has been one of the standout performers for Brighton over the past year. The 26-year-old arrived at the Amex Stadium in 2021.

He was initially sent out on-loan to Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise before shining in an excellent debut campaign as he helped the Seagulls to a place in the Europa League. Mitoma has two years left to run on his contract on the South Coast.

Whilst Crooks has called on Sancho and Antony to replicate Mitoma’s showings, Red Devils’ icon Gary Neville is not convinced. He called out the Brazilian as far back as January for his disappointing displays since arriving at Old Trafford.

Speaking at the time, the former defender said: “It's just not quite happening for him at this moment in time. He's got a bit of work to do. He's got obviously some growth to go through and obviously he's newer to England than the other two are, but they're little complaints at this moment in time.”
