Sainsbury’s is giving shoppers bonus Nectar points when they buy fruit and vegetables.

The supermarket is bringing back its “Great Fruit and Veg Challenge” from this Wednesday, which gives shoppers the chance to earn additional Nectar points when they complete tasks in the Nectar app. Sainsbury’s says shoppers can earn a minimum of 1,000 bonus Nectar points if they complete all the challenges.

Shoppers will need to sign up for the “Great Fruit and Veg Challenge” when it goes live in the Nectar app. Once you’ve signed up, you’ll then start seeing goals which set out what you need to buy to get the extra Nectar credit.

Sainsbury’s says these will be personalised, so they should be based on the fruit and veg you’d normally buy anyway. Shoppers can get the bonus points for both in-store and online spends as long as they use their Nectar card. Fresh, tinned, frozen and dried fruit and vegetables can all be used to contribute toward the portions you need to buy.

The “Great Fruit and Veg Challenge” will run for seven weeks, from Wednesday, August 23 until Tuesday, October 10. Last year’s challenge saw 88 million portions of fruit and vegetables purchased.

Sainsbury’s shoppers normally get one Nectar point for every £1 spent in stores and online, or for every litre of fuel purchased. You can get bonus Nectar points on certain items in store if you activate offers in the Nectar app. The type of offers available are typically based on products you normally buy.

You also get points when you shop with other retailers including Argos, ASOS and Sky. Each point is worth 0.5p to spend in Sainsbury's stores - so 100 points are therefore 50p. Or you can spend them at other partner stores, sometimes for a slight boost.

For example, you can spend 350 points at Caffè Nero, normally worth £1.75, to get any hot or cold drink. Or you can convert your Nectar points into Avios to spend on British Airways flights, with 400 Nectar points currently worth 250 Avios.

Alex Lovell, head of loyalty marketing at Sainsbury’s, said: “We know how important it is for our customers to eat a varied and healthy diet, and that’s why we’re bringing back the Great fruit & veg challenge for yet another year. The challenge is a great incentive for our customers to purchase more of the fruit and vegetables they love and to add some more variety to their shopping baskets.

“Last year, we saw over 580,000 customers take part and a whopping 106 million bonus points awarded. Now in its fourth year, and with even more points up for grabs, we hope customers will enjoy this year’s challenge.”
