Man Utd enter Verratti transfer battle with two clubs as Ten Hag set for boost

Manchester United may have already spent nearly £200million on new signings this summer, but their meek return to Premier League action suggests their squad still needs even more investment.

Erik ten Hag's side were fortunate to kick off their 2023-24 campaign with a controversial 1-0 victory at home to Wolves on Monday before slumping to a limp 2-0 defeat in Saturday's trip to Tottenham. Summer arrivals Andre Onana and Mason Mount have started both games while £72m striker Rasmus Hojlund awaits his debut due to injury.

But there could soon be a fourth new arrival at Old Trafford before deadline day on September 1, as Ten Hag and the Red Devils' recruitment team line up a number of targets for the final 11 days of the window. What will be crucial for United is how many players they're able to offload, as departures would bring in much-needed funds and help the club avoid any Financial Fair Play sanctions.

Here's a round-up of the latest transfer news from Old Trafford.

Battle for Verratti

Manchester United face competition from Bayern Munich and Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli in their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti. That's according to L'Equipe, as cited by GFFN, who claim that United boss Erik ten Hag has green-lit a move for Verratti, 30, whose time in Paris appears to be up.

PSG are willing to sell the Italy international, despite handing a new long-term contract only nine months ago. That's because new manager Luis Enrique doesn't view Verratti as part of his plans, leaving him out of the squad for PSG's opening two league games.

United braced for Henderson bidding war

Crystal Palace are poised to spark a bidding war over the signing of Dean Henderson, who's long been tipped for a return to Nottingham Forest. The United goalkeeper is keen to leave Old Trafford on a permanent basis after spending last season on loan with Forest and seeing Andre Onana signed back at Old Trafford.

The Sun report that Henderson has been made a target by Palace. The 26-year-old's return to Nottingham recently stalled because Forest demanded the deal was initially another loan, whereas the Red Devils would prefer a straight permanent sale for around £30million. The impasse has allowed Palace to swoop in and wrestle for his signature in a move which could significantly boost Ten Hag's budget.

Pavard wants Inter move

Rumoured United target Benjamin Pavard has his heart set on a transfer to Inter Milan, the Italian club's CEO, Beppe Marotta, claims. Pavard, 27, has been linked with both the Red Devils and Arsenal after the France international defender - who's able to play as a right-back and centrally - was made surplus to requirements by Bayern Munich.

Inter chief Marotta is quoted by Corriere Dello Sport as saying: "The will of the player is certainly important. The player has expressed his desire to come with us and it is a lot. Bayern is very rich, it is difficult to give up its elements of greater quality and depth."
