Gamescom Opening Night Live is the biggest showcase coming out of next week's even in Cologne, where we'll get updates on games that have already been confirmed – and undoubtedly a few surprises .

Gamescom Opening Night Live is the brainchild of industry veteran Geoff Keighley, bridging the gap between Summer Game Fest and The Game Awards that are held every December. Last year's event gave us looks at titles like Dead Island 2, Scars Above, Sonic Frontiers, Lies of P, and Everywhere – the upcoming game from former GTA producer, Leslie Benzies. In terms of hardware reveals, Gamescom 2022 was our first look at the Dualsense Edge.

Talking to VGC about what Gamescom Opening Night Live 2023 has in store, Geoff Keighley said, “This year’s ONL is less about announcing brand new projects, and more about giving fans updates on some of the biggest games due out over the next year”.

Gamescom Opening Night Live: confirmed games

Thanks to Geoff Keighley's Twitter feed, we already know a fair few of the games set to be showcased at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2023. Unless he reveals any more surprises in the days leading up to the event, here's a rundown of confirmed games for Opening Night Live:

  • Alan Wake 2 – Alan's story trailer
  • Black Myth Wukong – new look
  • Fort Solis – appearance from Troy Baker, Roger Clark, and Julia Brown
  • Assassin's Creed Mirage – new look
  • Nightingale – new trailer
  • Crimson Desert – new look at gameplay
  • Mortal Kombat 1 – new trailer
  • Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty DLC – new look at gameplay
  • Lords of the Fallen – story trailer
  • Sonic Superstars – new news
  • Modern Warfare 3 – gameplay premiere

There's also going to be an appearance from Zack Snyder who'll be premiering a teaser trailer for his upcoming film Rebel Moon alongside a 'special announcement', because lord knows we want more film trailers at gaming events.

Gamescom Opening Night Live 2023: predictions

In terms Gamescom Opening Night Live 2023 predictions I'll be looking at past Geoff Keighley-hosted events to try and figure out what to expect. For example, FromSoftware has had significant reveals at The Game Awards 2017 with the first teaser for Sekiro: Shadow's Die Twice; an again at Summer Game Fest 2021 with an Elden Ring gameplay debut.

Most recently – Armored Core 6 Fires of Rubicon was announced at The Game Awards 2022. Because of this I'd be shocked if we didn't see something from the legendary studio at Opening Night Live, and my money's on either a final trailer for Armored Core 6, or a first look at Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, which was announced in February.

Meanwhile, the Marvel's Spider-Man 2 release date was revealed during Summer Game Fest 2023, and considering its release is happening in just a couple of months, it would make sense for for one last, big marketing push. And what better place than Opening Night Live? Perhaps we'll get our first look at Venom in action? In terms of other Sony announcements maybe we'll see more of Death Stranding 2 given Keighley's bromance with Hideo Kojima.

Nintendo's track record during Keighley events is hit-and-miss. But assuming there's probably going to be a Nintendo Direct in September, like every other, year I'd wager we probably won't get anything major from Nintendo at this show. At most, maybe a short Super Mario Bros Wonder trailer.
