SteamDB Elden Ring DLC update suggests that the release date is edging closer
Players have received yet another clear indication that Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, could be out very soon, despite no official word from developer FromSoftware.
Elden Ring is set to celebrate its second anniversary next month, rendering players hopeful that a release date reveal for the game’s forthcoming DLC could be imminent. It’s about to be a year since Shadow of the Erdtree was announced too, and there’s been no word from publisher Bandai Namco or developer FromSoftware since. There’s been a few rumblings that the Elden Ring DLC could be out within the next few months, and the latest comes courtesy of Steam’s backend.
Reliable Steam data tracker SteamDB reported that a new update file was added to Elden Ring’s DLC section within the Steam backend. It marks the first update the PC version of the game has received for well over a year – 15 months, in fact – leading folks to believe that the memorably titled “Unknown App2778580” is FromSoftware’s sneaky way of preparing the highly-anticipated Shadow of the Erdtree expansion for launch.
This latest update to the game on Steam perfectly lines up with last month’s Elden Ring DLC leak, in which a third-party Xbox controller product listing strongly suggested it’d be targeting a February 2024 release window. The controller was allegedly intended to “sync with the new Shadow of the Erdtree expansion release” before the listing was mysteriously pulled by the retail site. If anything, this would only indicate more that Shadow of the Erdtree could launch on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC sooner rather than later.
Tree of life
If I were Bandai Namco or FromSoftware right now, I’d certainly move quickly to try and get ahead of the nigh-on inevitable Elden Ring DLC Shadow of the Erdtree release date leak. Elden Ring players have been (not so) patiently waiting for an update on the expansion for a whole year since it was announced, and all these dribs and drabs of information are only making them grow ever hastier. It’s only a matter of time before something seriously revealing makes itself known.
Why Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's six week delay is a good thingIn many ways, it’s flattering that the Elden Ring player base is so eager to learn anything new about the Elden Ring DLC Shadow of the Edtree release. 2023 saw FromSoftware staying mostly silent on the topic, as it focused on building up hype on its other game, Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon. Speaking to Japanese publication Game Watch last month, FromSoftware’s parent company stated DLC development was “proceeding smoothly”. Steam’s latest backend update suggests it's much smoother than initially believed.
