Noughties pop icon Vanessa Carlton looks very different 21 years on from her hit single, with the star looking almost unrecognisable with her new look and edgy style in 2023.

Most readers will know of the song A Thousand Miles, which was crooned by Vanessa when she was only 21 years of age. The hit is well-known around the globe, with it even famous for scenes in White Chicks and Legally Blonde.

The four-minute-long piano-driven pop track came out on February 18, 2002. It then soon entered the top 10 in the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and France. In the US, it peaked at number five on the US Billboard Chart, with Vanessa's debut album then going platinum.

Meanwhile, on YouTube, the music video was uploaded seven years after it came out, due to the birth of YouTube not being until 2009. At the time of this article being published, the music video had received more than 366 million views, with 3.5 million likes and almost 200,000 comments.

But since the hit came out 21 years ago, Vanessa has seemingly ditched the fresh-faced hippy look she sported while playing the piano in the song's music video. Sporting a plaited hairstyle and glossy look back then, she now embraces an even stronger boho look. Remaining true to her edgy roots, Vanessa can now be seen sporting wavy locks and wide-brim hats.

The Pennsylvania-born star, who came out as bisexual in June 2010 while headlining Nashville Pride, has 100,000 followers on Instagram and often shares snaps from her day-to-day life, as well as chatty videos, too.

Vanessa's hit A Thousand Miles has become a globally known song

In Vanessa's most recent video clip, which was shared on Instagram on August 11, the singer could be seen and heard showing off her "business idea" of biodegradable insoles for shoes and boots. In the clip Vanessa donned her brunette locks down and framing her face, with a hat atop her head and a classic outfit of jeans and Chelsea boots.

Commenting on the video, one fan penned: "Vanessa is a multifaceted icon and this is proof. And also maybe releasing one of the most influential songs of all time too, but." Another then added: "Vanessa, you are a trip! I love you."

Since A Thousand Miles was released, Vanessa married John McCauley, 37, with their wedding taking place in December 2013. They welcomed a daughter named Sidney in January 2015. Vanessa also continued singing, with her releasing music consistently and her last album coming out in 2020.
