Horrifying pictures show the moment a woman's body was thrown around in the air by a crocodile after it had killed her - while she was trying to wash her clothes.

Jyotshna Jena, from the village of Palatpur, in Odisha, India, was doing her laundry in the Brahmani River near her home when the crocodile pounced on her. The croc trapped her in its jaws and flipped her around, tragically taking her life. In the pictures, the 12ft animal can be seen flipping Jyotshna’s body around above the water in the terrifying attack.

The pictures are from a video taken from the other side of the brown river in which the crocodile was situated when it attacked the helpless woman. The crocodile reportedly began eating the victim as onlookers watched on in shock. Jyotshna’s body was later found floating in the river by her fellow villagers, who retrieved it from the river safely, successfully avoiding any further incidents.

The attack took place on the morning of August 16 and caused panic among the local community who live near the river. One local said: “These alarming events are a reminder of the perils in Odisha waters.

“It is crucial for the authorities and local communities to collaborate and come up with strategies to minimise these risks and guarantee the safety of people living in these regions. The tragic loss of lives caused by these creatures needs immediate and comprehensive attention.”

Crocodile attacks aren’t uncommon in Odisha State, which is located on the east side of India and includes the cities of Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Rourkela. Through the state runs the Brahmani River, a 799km major seasonal river which runs through eastern India and has a significant crocodile population.

Recently, a resident of Kendrapara Town, elderly man Amulya Das, was killed by a crocodile on 28 July in the Brahmani River. Six days before, a woman was killed in Rajnagar Block, Kendrapara, while washing cooking utensils. On 14 June, a young boy was attacked by a croc in front of his mother - also in Kendrapara.
