Heavyweight contender Maurice Greene is training with MMA's greatest Jon Jones as he looks to take home $1million and the PFL world heavyweight title this season.

Greene appeared to have been eliminated back in June when he was defeated by the previous year's champion Ante Delija in the second round of regular season fights. But an injury to third-place Marcelo Nunes saw him drafted in as the next highest-ranked contender for a back door effort at the belt.

And with Jones, who many believe to be the best fighter in the sport's history, in his camp Greene has a new lease on life. Both men are heading to the mecca of fight sports for world title headliners as Jones defends his UFC title in November against Stipe Miocic after Greene takes on Renan Ferreira tomorrow night.

But the 'Crochet Boss' is putting more stock in the belt and its legacy than the massive cash prize, which would also be a game changer for his young family.

"There's nobody like him," Greene said of his teammate, who cornered him for his last outing against Delija. "After seeing what he puts himself through and how he's locked in for training camp and how he goes through the process of what he does - it's kind of amazing to be a part of it and be on the inside.

"I don't even get to see everything because I'm not a coach, I'm just his training partner and his friend. But to get to see his perspective on things, it helps me in the cage. It helps me come out and imagine how this fight's going to be - I could be wrong but I've accepted I'm going to bleed a little bit!"

And it is not lost on the veteran fighter that this could be his last opportunity at a belt, particularly given that he feared his run was over as recently as six weeks ago. He will be approaching the fight with ginormous Brazilian Ferreira like a man possessed, and is eager to show why he deserved to be brought back into the fold.

"I had this weird feeling that I would be fighting anyway if I'm honest," he added. "I was told I was the alternate fairly early and I've been around the game for quite some time, at kickboxing tournaments and such and I've simply never been an alternate who doesn't fight, I've fought every single time.

"So in my head I've been fighting this whole time, they gave me the call to give me a second chance and I'm 37-years-old, you don't get second chances like this. I'm in the best shape of my life, I'm the biggest I've ever been but you just don't get these second chances so I'm f***ing ecstatic."

Maurice Greene fights Renan Ferreira tomorrow night at The Theatre in Madison Square Garden. Viewers can watch from 11pm on DAZN in the UK
