Erik ten Hag urged to bring Romelu Lukaku back to Man Utd to solve glaring issue
Dwight Yorke has urged his former club Manchester United to cheekily try to re-sign Romelu Lukaku on a loan deal from Chelsea.
Lukaku previously spent two seasons at Old Trafford between 2017 and 2019; he was signed in a landmark £75million deal by Jose Mourinho but two years later he was sold to Inter after falling out of favour under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The former Everton striker was a popular figure with the Italian club before he was lured back to Stamford Bridge for a second spell in the summer of 2021 in a blockbuster £97.5million move. But after struggling to live up to expectations, the 30-year-old was shipped back out to the Serie A outfit on loan before the start of the 2022/23 campaign.
The Belgian striker was plagued by injuries last season and has found the net 14 times in 37 appearances but was not a regular as his side reached the Champions League final. He is now back at Chelsea – who are desperate to move him on before the transfer window closes.
Yorke – who was part of United’s treble-winning side in the 1998/99 campaign – has now suggested that United should consider re-signing Lukaku on a loan deal from Chelsea…a move that seems improbable, to put it lightly.

Having signed Rasmus Hojlund this summer and with a focus on recruiting ready-made first-team players alongside young talents, the 30-year-old – who left Old Trafford previously on not the best of terms – simply would not fit.

Lukaku is on the lookout for a new club after returning to Chelsea from Inter (AFP via Getty Images)“Romelu Lukaku is absolutely still good enough to play for a top-six club,” Yorke told OLBG, before explaining the clubs who he thought would prove suitable. “I think Man United or Tottenham should take Lukaku on a short-term loan deal and agree to pay a certain amount of his wages.
“As much as people say about Lukaku, he has a very impressive goalscoring record and he doesn't get as much credit as he deserves. If you have a fired-up Lukaku who wants to play for you, he's a match-winner and a handful for any opponent in the world.
“Man United have invested heavily in Rasmus Hojlund, but if you want to compete with the best then Lukaku is that player who can score 15 to 20 goals in a season, which is priceless and hard to find in today's game. Lukaku is still only 30 years old and a proven goalscorer, I think whoever gets him on a short loan deal will have done good and subtle business.”
New Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino was recently quizzed on whether Lukaku would depart and, emphatically, told ESPN : "I think it is obvious. I think we can repeat this. It is obvious what is going on with him.
"I think in between the club and the player, they share the same similar ideas and we are working on that to try to fix it and have the best solution for both parties."
