A pub hotel has been slammed for being "filthy dirty" with one visitor saying they would "rather sleep in the beer garden".

The hotel at the Crown & Anchor Inn, in Manchester's Northern Quarter, has been forced to defend itself after claims the "cleaners must have been abducted by aliens". It has a 4.6 score out of ten on Booking.com and a three out of five rating on TripAdvisor.

While a number of reviews praise the venue's staff as "amazing" and "so helpful", as well as acknowledging the close proximity to the city centre and its low prices, some guests have been quick to highlight their gripes with the hotel. One guest, who posted about their stay in July with a two out of five rating, described their room as "absolutely filthy".

The person wrote: "Their cleaners must have been abducted by aliens because that can be the only explanation of the state of this property. The floors in the room were absolutely filthy, the lamp and curtain were broken, there were cigarette butts on the window sill and cigarette ash marks on the bed, shreds of toilet paper on the floor.

"The shared bathroom in the hallway was exactly the same, complete with used wrappers from women's sanitary pads, other trash and dirty towels on the floor and a broken door that I struggled to close." The reviewer however added that staff 'tried to be helpful' and their bed was 'actually surprisingly comfortable'.

Another reviewer, who gave the hotel a two out of five rating based also on their stay in July, said: "Centrally located and easy to find, but beyond that, the rooms and facilities are well overpriced for the quality: it was all very messy, dirty and tired. All things being equal, I'd have rather slept in the beer garden. I would NOT recommend."

One reviewer said the "pub basically turns into a club at night with thudding music", while a further simply said of the hotel: "Looks old, bit filthy, smell is bad." On a similar line a visitor said: "Room needed a desperate update. Shared bathroom on our floor was out of order."

And one person said it felt liked an "abandoned building". They said: "The bathroom on my floor wasn't working and when I went to the one on the floor below. It was like something from an abandoned building. It looked as though it hadn't been cleaned for months. The corridors were cluttered with broken mirrors and TV's and the whole experience wasn't ideal."

Stonegate, which operates the pub alongside an independent owner, said it would look into the reviews highlighted. A spokesperson for Stonegate told the Manchester Evening News: "The Crown and Anchor is not a directly managed Stonegate business and one where our operator offers budget accommodation. The premises are regularly cleaned. We are in contact with the operator and will highlight the reviews received in order any customer issues may be addressed."
