Europe is full of iconic landmarks such as the Colosseum in Rome, The Eiffel Tower in Paris and The Acropolis in Athens.

However, some tourists have been less than impressed - and taken to TripAdvisor to leave some pretty savage and hilarious reviews.

Some are (hopefully) jokes, such as one person calling the Colosseum 'trash' and complaining about 'a big break' in the building, but others are being mocked for being utterly ridiculous. (One person was left annoyed because there were 'too many French people' while they were visiting Paris.

Travel experts at DealChecker have uncovered some of the weird and wonderful reviews left by disgruntled holidaymakers - check them out below.

Are there any famous monuments that left you unimpressed? Tell us which ones in the comments below.

'Too gatey' - Brandenburg Gate, Germany

The name of the Brandenburg Gate may in fact give away what this landmark is.

Known for the way in which the sun sets behind its towering arches, to this tourist the Brandenburg gate is ‘too gatey’ for their taste.

It is unclear what exactly they were hoping for.

If you want to go and check out this 18th-century neoclassical monument, flights to Berlin can be bagged from £152 while train fares go from £70.

‘Too many French people’ - Eiffel Tower

TripAdvisor: 4.5 (141,670 reviews)

Possibly the most famous and revered on this list, the Eiffel Tower attracts seven million visitors year.

One of their number was less than impressed with what they found, condemning the site as having ‘too many French people’… in France.

For the less-xenophobic among us, a trip to the wrought-iron lattice tower is well worth it and easy both via air and rail.

‘Trash’ – Colosseum, Rome

Built in 80 AD, the Roman Colosseum is a fascinating look back to the time of the Roman Empire.

It is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built, and is still the largest standing amphitheatre in the world, despite its age.

Fast forward to September 2022, and one tourist is slating the extensive history of this landmark, due to the fact it is not entirely in one piece.

"This place is trash. Why couldn't they just fix it. It has a big break which is just unacceptable."

Flights to Rome in the middle of April - when the city is arguably at its most lovely - can be found here.

‘Construction site’ - Acropolis of Athens

TripAdvisor: 4.5 (36,453 reviews)

One of the oldest on this list, the Acropolis of Athens, Greece, dates back to the 5th century BC.

As such, a few obvious signs of wear and tear visible in some scaffolding holding the ancient structure up atop its sun-soaked hill are forgivable.

One traveller thought not, saying they were left ‘totally disappointed’ by the state of the thing, calling it a ‘construction site’.

‘Horror movie’ - Széchenyi Baths and Pool, Budapest

TripAdvisor: 4.0 (32,947 reviews)

What sounds better than basking in the Hungarian summer sun in the world-famous Széchenyi Baths and Pool?

The Budapest attraction is known for its opulent décor, the medicinal qualities of its water and the balmy 77C it reaches.

One reviewer was less than impressed, declaring it the ‘most disgusting thing’ they have ever done and encouraging other visitors to ‘disinfect’ their ‘entire bodies’ if they visit.

Considered a top Budapest attraction with reviews declaring it as a ‘must-do’ and even a ‘hang-over cure’, others have managed to dip in and out without feeling similarly grossed out.

Flights to Budapest can be bagged for £196 return.
