Man Utd icon Vidic details why Onana will be a success despite Ferdinand warning

Nemanja Vidic believes Andre Onana has all the tools to succeed at Manchester United following his summer switch from Inter Milan.

Erik ten Hag made his move for Onana after dispensing with the services of David de Gea, who had been United's first-choice goalkeeper for over a decade. It cost around £47million to prise Onana away from Inter Milan, so the pressure is on the Cameroon international to live up to that price tag.

After thriving under Ten Hag at Ajax, Onana played a key role in the Inter side that reached last year's Champions League final. And Vidic, who captained United during his playing days, is adamant that Onana's big match pedigree will help him thrive at Old Trafford.

Speaking after Onana's eventful Premier League debut against Wolves earlier this week, Vidic told Manutd.com : “I’m expecting him to be a good replacement for David. We know how David was important for the squad for many years, but I think Onana can bring something different and, as well, to be important for us in the years to come.

“He was in Inter, he has the experience of playing in a big team, and before [that] he was in Ajax, so all those teams have a winning mentality and they are challenging for the trophies.

Although Onana produced a string of fine saves in United's season opener, he was also at the heart of some late controversy after he flattened Sasa Kalajdzic in the penalty area.

Fortunately for Manchester United, Onana's clumsy challenge went unpunished, but that rash moment was a perfect example of the element of his game which Vidic's former defensive partner, Rio Ferdinand, predicted could cause his old side problems.

Speaking about Onana earlier this summer, he told Vibe with FIVE : “He’ll give United more confidence and more ability to play out from the back and I think he suits an Erik ten Hag team. He’s a real modern-day goalkeeper. You see teams pressing him and he doesn’t even panic.

He gets the ball in, brings on the press says ‘Come on, come to me’ and when that player comes to him he knows there’s a player free somewhere else and he normally finds them.

“I think there will be mistakes and playing that risky way you do have mistakes and that happens, but it’s about staying true to your beliefs, finding the right balance and remaining calm throughout those periods.”
