The suspect who allegedly shot dead a journalist reporting at the scene of a shooting along with a nine-year-old girl and a woman appears to smirk as he is led away by police.

Journalist Dylan Lyons, 24, who worked for Spectrum News 13, was at the scene reporting on the earlier death of the 20-year-old woman in Pine Hills, Orlando, Florida, US.

His colleague Jesse Walden, a photographer, was also shot, and is in a critical condition in hospital.

Keith Melvin Moses, who police believe is responsible for the shootings, has been arrested and is held in custody.

Deputies had initially responded to the incident on Wednesday morning following reports of a woman in her 20s being shot while sitting in her car.

Later in the day, the same man allegedly approached the news vehicle and opened fire, hitting two, before walking to a nearby home and shooting a woman and her nine-year-old daughter.

The young girl was fatally injured and her mother is fighting for her life, police said.

Spectrum 13 journalist Celeste Springer said during her live on-air report: "Please, please, say a prayer tonight for our co-worker who is in critical condition.

He has been charged with the shooting death of the 20-year-old woman, and police have said more charges are expected for the other four shooting victims.

Sheriff John Mina said in a press conference: "The shooting this morning, the two shootings of the two news reporters, and the shooting of the mother and child are all connected.

"The suspect is responsible for all of them."

WESH2 reporter Luana Munoz broke down on camera as she reported on the death of Lyons.

"I apologise, this is really difficult to cover," WESH2 reporter Munoz said outside the hospital.

Munoz described the moment she saw the distraught fiancée of the journalist killed in the gun violence.

"We go home at night afraid that something like this will occur," the reporter said after pausing to collect herself.

Although police haven't confirmed the names of any of the victims, a GoFundMe has been launched which reads: "The love of my life was murdered.

"I will never be the same person ever again. Please help my family and I during this time."

Charter Communications, Spectrum News 13's parent company, released a statement saying: "We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague and the other lives senselessly taken today."
