An NFL analyst thinks the San Francisco 49ers made one of the "worst trades in the draft in history" after their decision to acquire Trey Lance.

Teams who are keen to sign a player of their choice will sometimes make some sacrifices in order to achieve this. For example, in 2021 the NFC West team gave up three first-round picks, as well as a 2022 third-round pick to move Lance up from number 12 to number three in the 2021 draft order.

However, Lance has suffered injuries over the last two seasons, which started with breaking his right index finger in the final preseason game of 2021. He then broke his ankle in just the second week of the last campaign, playing just two games.

Lance endured a difficult pre-season game for the 49ers against the Las Vegas Raiders this past weekend. He was sacked four times and also had two throws hit defenders in the hands and held the ball too long.

During an appearance on ESPN’s First Take former NFL player and analyst Marcus Spears thinks the 49ers’ decision to give away future picks to acquire Lance may prove costly. “Look, they’ve got a terrible situation on their hands with Trey Lance. … This may go down as one of the worst trades in the draft in the history of the NFL,” he said.

“The fortunate part is Kyle Shanahan has done such a phenomenal job of getting this team ready to play and being so creative offensively that it hasn’t shown in the win/loss column. But you lost a lot by going up and getting Trey Lance.”

The Miami Dolphins received the three first-rounders back in the deal the 49ers did with them to go up for Trey Lance. The Dolphins have since traded all three picks of those picks to acquire Jaylen Waddle, Tyreek Hill and Bradley Chubb.

Those are moves the 49ers could have made had they not chosen not to sacrifice their picks to draft Lance. Spears thinks the five-time Super Bowl winners could have chosen to draft Chicago Bears star Justin Fields in 2021 instead.

He holds the record for the most rushing yards by a quarterback in a regular season game with 178. “We [Dan Orlovsky and himself] sat there during the draft, and we’re like, ‘Why wouldn’t you take Justin Fields?” he added.

"Like, why wouldn’t you have Justin Fields in this situation after we saw Zach Wilson go?’ Some of us even thought that Justin Fields should go beyond Zach Wilson.” Following the 34-7 defeat to the Raiders, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan urged Lance to be less hesitant when moving forward.

"Yeah, Trey’s got to make that throw still to move the chains. Dwelley didn’t make it easy on him. It’s an option route. It was zone,” he said. “You should hook up decisively right there on the numbers and that’s what Trey was expecting and that’s what we wanted Dwelley to do.

"And Trey was aggressively ripping that. That was one play he wasn’t hesitating on early, that was real good. And Dwelley just surprised him a little bit, which does happen at times and then it threw Trey off. So, Trey still should have made it. Dwelley could have made it a lot easier on him."
